Travel with young adult sons
Posted: Sun November 23, 2008 03:11 AM UTC
My husband and I are trying to plan a week in Florida with our 2 young adult sons (ages 18 & 21). We plan on being in Florida over New Years Eve . Would like to spend a day at Universal and the rest of it somewhere close (or on) a beach on the gulf side of the state. I have been looking at the Sarasota area but seeing some comments about some areas not being well liked by people the ages of our sons. Does anyone have any recommendations of places they have been with children are sons age?

I filled out 5 of my interests and they are similar to my sons & husband , but they also like being able to link up with boy&girls their own age at some times during the trip. Also we do not like staying at hotels that allow smoking or pets

The beaches in Sarasota are second to none, but the night life here is somwhat limited if that's what you're getting at. Having said that I have three teenage boys, and I'm told there is young fun to be had at places such as Siesta Key and downtown Sarasota. Elsewhere on the West Coast I might suggest the Tampa area- you could go to Bush Gardens and make a day or so of it. Let me know if I can help...

Personally, I love Sarasota. You can visit the "Ca d'Zan" museum, the fantastical estate that belonged to John and Mable Ringling, of the infamous circus family. Mable was a collector of art, and they have some incredible art collections. The boys will love the 2 circus museums they have. There's video's and interactive circus displays. You can visit:www.ringling.org for more data. I've heard and read that there's some Salvador Dali originals as well down there. Don't give up on Sarasota. It's a paradise of unclaimed gems.~

My son went to college in Sarasota, and if he and his wife could find jobs in their professtional fields, he would move back. He absolutely loved Sarasota and the area around it.

In 1927, John Ringling chose Sarasota for the home of his famous circus, Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. He became a major influence on the town, and that influence can still be seen today. You will find many wonderful things to explore in this town, as well as beautiful clear white sand beaches. Some of my favorite activities in Sarasota are visiting the John and Mabal Ringling Circus Museum, the John and Mabal Ringling Museum of Art, Ringling’s historic Ca d’Zan home, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, as well as Siesta Key and Lido Beaches. Both adults and children enjoy the Sarasota Jungle Gardens, which includes a petting area and animal shows. Nearby Myakka State Park is one of my favorite nature reserves. This is a great place for seeing many types of birds and alligators in the wild.

Clearwater Beach/Tampa Y'bor City: I love both, as I've lived in Clearwater twice this life time. I think the sons will love Y'Bor City, but it's mainly night life, and one of your son's is not old enough to drink. Clearwater can be fun, but it's mainly a party scene. January is going to be cold and rainy. I've experienced it getting down to the low 30's in January.~
