Panamá City Embera and Portobello - overnight in PC or Colon?
Posted: Sat November 22, 2008 07:46 PM UTC
Hello,

During our 3 days visit in Panama City, we would like to visit Colon/Portobello in one day and do the Embera tour on another day.

In order to avoid 2 trips towards Colon, we thought to stay in Colon overnight instead of going back and forward from PC. Can anybody advice if that would be a good choice? Or it is anyway doable and not heavy to do those transfers from PC?

thank you in advance for your help.

Colon is considered a dangerous town for tourists per international standard, the town has no sights or attractions whatsoever and what you would be doing is just stay locked into your hotel room. The only place I have been in Colon is the bus stations (from/to Panama City) and did not look promising. My experience is dated 2007 but I would not assume things have changed much over the last one year.

All in all I would stay in PC and take a bus (or other transportation) in the early morning hours.

Enjoy Panama.

Hi Jolita,

I do agree that Colon is a dangerous city especially during the evening times. It is better choice to visit the city during the day. you could travel there by bus (its ok), by train (very scenic) but the train runs from PC-Colon-Colon-PC once per day.

An alternative would be to rent a car (best) visit Colon, visit the historical sites, and then head towards La Guayra near Portobelo (nice place to check out old spanish forts from the colonial era) when you get to La Guayra hire a cayuco and cross to Isla Grande.

In Isla Grande you could stay at any of the 3 hotels in the area (they are safe,I personally recommend the Sister moon) and enjoy some fun in the sun or explore the small island with all its beauty.

I'm not so sure about the Embera tour, in my opinion, it is a tourist trap that I could skip for another trip.

Travel safe.
