3 days in Regina!

Hi people, I've just booked 3 days in Regina for a stopover enroute to the East coast of Canada in August, I'm thinking i'll go to the RCMP Museum but is there anywhere else i shouldnt miss?

Is Regina really as bad safety/crime wise as people say or is it all being blown out of proportion?

I would recommend reading my (and those of other VT'ers) Regina page.
You will find enough ideas.

Never heard (from our relatives who are living in Regina) about bad safety/crime. Most probably it isn't not worse than anywhere else.

I'd recommend going on a tour of Government House, a tour of the legislative building, and walking around Wascana Centre.

I know that Regina has the highest crime rate per capita in Canada, but keep in mind that Canada's crime rate is not very high to begin with. I spent about a week in Regina and felt quite safe the entire time, even late at night. I think that even if it's a rather small city, if you take the same kind of precautions you would take in a bigger city (keep an eye on your belongings, stay away from sketchy neighborhoods late at night), you'll be perfectly fine. Having lived in Regina for 13 years, I find it very hard to believe that the city has the highest crime rate per capita in the country! Where do those stats come from?

Cam, this is a city of roughly 150,000. They usually average one murder a year. It is a really safe city. There tend to be a lot of car break-ins and petty stuff like that, so don't leave anything of value in your rental car. But I would not be the least bit concerned about walking around after dark in the downtown area. Most areas of the city are extremely safe, and I have never heard of anyone being mugged there.

The suggestions for the legislative buildings and Wascana Park are great. Casino Regina is very tastefully decorated in the Monte Carlo style and would be an interesting stop if you enjoy gambling. Depending on when you're there, you might be able to take in a CFL game. Make sure you stick around the RCMP barracks long enough to see the sunset ceremony, which happens at around 7:00 pm during the summer, it's the best part of the tour, IMO.

If you will have a rental car, you might also want to consider making a day trip to Moose Jaw to tour the old tunnels downtown.

Hopefully without getting Regina residents on my back, I would suggest that three days in Regina is too long.

The safety thing surprises quite a bit. I just can't imagine anyone from Saskatchewan giving anyone a hard time. Perhaps the crime is like it is in Winnipeg - occurs between residents of some of the more distressed areas of town.

Have a nice trip! The east coast is a great place to visit in Canada.

I came across this information on the Statistics Canada Website a few months ago and it's been written about in most national newspapers, which probably explains why people talk a lot about Regina's crime rate... but like I said, I felt quite safe when I was there. I walked all over the downtown area on my own and went out in the evening, and I never once felt unsafe :o)

Statistics can be very easily twisted to serve whatever purpose the person quoting them wants. lol. According to 2007 stats from the Justice Department, Saskatoon actually had the highest crime rate in the country, and Regina was second.

Of the criminal acts included in Regina's stats, violent crime made up 15% of the total reported crimes, property crimes accounted for 33% (like I said, lots of b&e's and car break ins), and the remaining 52% were "other" crimes. Of the "other" category, 79% were mischief, disturbing the peace and bail violations (including failure to appear orders). The entire province of Saskatchewan had 30 murders in 2007.

Interesting how much different those stats look in detail!

Thanks guys it definitely doesnt put me off visiting Regina! Unfortunately i won't have a car so i'm hoping i'll be able to cab or walk to most downtown attractions!
