Indian tourist visa in Colombo, Sri Lanka (cheaper)? Posted: Sat November 15, 2008 05:36 PM UTC
Indian tourist visa in Colombo, Sri Lanka (cheaper)?
I know India needs visas for both Norwegian and Canadian nationals, and I've heard they hand out wonderfully long six-month visas. Of course, purchasing a visa in either Canada or Norway would prove expensive, maybe more than 50 euro. My question is, since I am going to Sri lanka first (and spending 10 or so days), should I apply for an Indian visa in Colombo the first day, have a look around, wait for the visa to clear, and stamped in the passport, then catch a cheap flight to Kerala, South India, just over the water? How much would an Indian visa (tourist status) cost in Colombo? Are there are special requirements needed, for example I heard applying for an Indian visa in Sub-saharan Africa requires an additional Yellow Fever vaccanination certificate, regardless of your nationality. Does India require similar paperwork from Westerners arriving via Sri Lanka as well? Thanks

I am on an American passport and had to get my Indian Visa while in Colombo this summer, and for us, it took 2 trips with a week between, as they said they had to fax our Immigration people for info.........and it cost about US$75.00.
Had to go to one office to apply, with quite a long wait; and then to the HIgh Commission at top of Galle Rd. to get the visa, which also took up ALL morning. AND, fortunately for me, I was living with someone in the VISA processing business and knew the ropes, so, buena suerte'. I would get the visas in your own country if possible and eliminate the hassle and being tied to being in Colombo; remember, they have more holidays than most other countries.

Hi
Indian embassy in sri lanka is most crowded embassy you have to wait all the day to get visa, lot of hassle. Sri lankan they only charging 610 rupees (approximately 6 us$) but foreigner will be same as mentioned in previous post. Better apply visa in your native country that will be most easiest way.
aside from your question if you need any assistance to organize your holiday in sri lanka please contact mr karnal de silva reliable driver/guide in sri lanka.

No cheap flights from Colombo to Kerala. Monoply of SriLankan Airlines.
Only LCC out of Colombo is Air India Express to Chennai - flights are often sold out far in advance.
