around madeira island by car (time needed) Posted: Thu November 13, 2008 02:13 PM UTC
i'll be visiting madeira in the beginning of december and will be staying in funchal.
i thought of renting a car and drive around the island coast. can someone tell me how much time would a round trip like that take(i tend to stop quite a lot to take photos, so i'm wondering if one day is enough)?
and another day perhaps for the "hilly" area?
i'm really confused about the size of the area... so any help is wellcome :)
thanks,
katja

Hi ,
I did this once quite a few years ago. I think it all depends of the weather. I did it easily in a day, but the weather was terrible in the hilly part, fog at first and then drizzle so perhaps didn't spend as much time on photos as I would normally. I would say try to wait for a good day (not easy I know) and then get going really early. On the hire car check the tyres and spare really well, there're not many garages up there.
Best of luck.

HI!
YOU CAN DO IT IN A DAY BUT IT'S BETTER ANOTHER DAY TO GO TO PICO DO AREEIRO, PICO RUIVO, CURRAL DAS FREIRAS IN ANOTHER DAY. IT IS A SMALL ISLAND BUT WITH SO MUCH TO SEE... ENJOY IT BECAUSE IT IS REALLY BEAUTIFUL!

as Lila sugested 2 days it's ok
Try to divide the island in 2 parts -roughly the west on 1st day, the east on 2nd. But begining of December weather can be quite unpredictable....So you can change
Nevertheless, Curral das Freiras, Cabo Girão, S. Vicente, Porto Moniz, Calheta, Câmara de Lobos (1st day) and Pico do Arieiro, Santana and Ponta de S. Lourenço (2nd day) ... you have a lot to photograph...
Some of my best flowers' photos I took not at the Botanical Gardens (Funchal) but on the wild in Encumeada (stop there on the way from Ribeira Brava to S. Vicente)
While in Funchal take profit of the car and go up to the Monte (insteed ot the cable car)
Enjoy
