San Francisco Super8 Lombard Street
Posted: Wed November 12, 2008 10:49 PM UTC
Hello

We're planning on staying at the Super8 next week as we're joining others who will already be there before joining a cruise. We won't have a car so is this in a safe, convenient area? Are there restaurants/public transport readily available? We will be getting there by taxi from SFO as we will have a lot of luggage.

Thanks for any advice.

The section of Lombard where the Super8 is located has many hotels and restaurants within 3 blocks walk. Just two blocks down on Steiner is Izzy's Steaks and Chops which is always great. Also A16 just a block away on Chestnut is good as well.

Like any big city you should watch your suroundings when walking but I've walked that area many times and never felt there was an need to be worried.

It's a very safe area even at night. I worked i the area for 12 years and had to take a bus home each night after 9 in the evening and I never had a problem. There are restaurants and shops all along Chestnut Street which is a block away towards the water. There is also public transportation readily available on Chestnut Street. The 30 stockton bus will take you to the wharf, Chinatown, North Beach and Union Square. The 28 19th Avenue will take you to the Golden Gate Bridge and Golden Gate Park. It's a great area and good choice. Enjoy!

It's a safe area, and you'll be able to find food, but you might want to stay somewhere more convenient. Yes, there are buses, and you can walk to Chrissy Field (nice view of the bay), but if you want to see the tourist sights, you won't be well situated. And the cab ride is going to be pricey. If you stay somewhere around Union Square you will spend more on your room, but you will probably save $25 on the cab fare. And you will have a lot more transportation options and tourist attractions nearby.

The Marina area is probably the best area of SF in which to stay. It's upscale residential not touristy. Chestnut street has about 3-4 long blocks of stores and restaurants and bars. Walk a few blocks to the Marina Green; you'll be glad that you did.

The van services from SfO to the motel would probably be cheaper than a taxi, SF taxis are the highest in the U.S.

DO NOT STAY AT UNION SQUARE

Thanks everyone for your help - that puts my mind at rest. It's not somewhere I would have chosen myself, but I don't want to start changing plans provided it's safe and reasonably convenient.
