So far what I know is that my friend’s father lives in an apartment. At the moment I have someone dealing with my tourist visa for me, and I was told to get a sponsor letter from my friend’s father, who is the UAE resident and whose apartment I will be staying in during my visit. However, he is afraid that my staying there will get them in trouble because I am not related to them…also he wants to see it in writing that it is okay (if it really is okay, that is) by law for me to visit there. Do you by any chance know any websites which states something like that? Also is there anywhere I can find an example of a sponsor letter?
I appreciate all the replies so far btw, thanks a lot!

Is there anyone who will report it to the Police?
Otherwise, alls ok... and no one would be the wiser for ignoring it.
thousands of ppl live together as man and wife without being married
do everything and no one knows it.
don\t worry

Well, as far as I know there is no way that the father of your friend can issue a letter stating that you would stay in his apartmrnt since you are not related!! If you can get your visa (Through some other means), then probably you can stay there as a temporary guest and as long as no problem is made for anybody your stay there would be fine.
Good luck.

Well the only way to get official information will be TO ASK A UAE EMBASSY!! Several (possibly out-of-date) sites say that friends, not just relatives, who are UAE residents, can sponsor people for visit/tourist visas, see:
http://guide.theemiratesnetwork.com/living/visa.php
http://www.airarabia.com/visa-information1.html
However, these say that since August 2008, only a UAE NATIONAL can sponsor friends, and expatriate residents there no longer can:
http://pinoyuaetruestories.wordpress.com/2008/08/16/new-visa-rule-in-uae/
http://allabudhabi.blogspot.com/2008/07/important-2008-uae-visa-changes-for.html
http://guchihana.multiply.com/journal/item/59/VISIT_VISA_IN_THE_UAE
You could always book a week or so in a hotel and get the hotel to organise the visa for you, then say you are travelling to other hotels if for some reason there is a problem with admitting you are staying with friends.

By law, you cannot stay with them.
Practically, do not inform, do not upset your neighbors, and avoid anything involving police and you should be fine. It is common practice around here but just be a little dicrete about it.

Have fun during your trip! Abu Dhabi is a very nice city
