what if any are the local towns near resorts of punta cana.
are there good nightlife in any (or day tiime bars for thast matter)

Check out this distance table: http://home.tiscali.nl/~t794614/diseng.htm - that should give you an idea.

Higüey and La Romana are the closest towns where you might find any bars and/or nightlife. Otherwise there's lots of those in Juan Dolio (between San Pedro de Macorís and Santo Domingo) and Santo Domingo.

I respectfuly disagree,

Near Punta Cana you have quite a few towns and great excursions from the hotels. Great nightlife (best clubs are Mangu and Tropicana) and GREAT women. Whatever you do please get out of your hotel and spend a night with the locals.
