Hi! Could anyone advise what is the best location for one to stay if one has no car & dislikes buses??
Any suggestions for a Scotish style pension or nice&clean B&B shall be very helpful.
thanks

I can't give you specific recommedations as I have never stayed in Edinburgh. But you need to be as near to the centre of the city as possible, especially on New Year's Day when there will be limited public transport anyway.

The Visit Scotland oficial Tourist Information site has a search engine which includes location:

http://www.edinburgh.org/accom/bed-and-breakfast/

It comes up with 20 properties within 0.5 miles of the city centre (and there is a map link for each). Most have their own websites linked, for more details.

You can also find reviews for any suitable places by googling the B&B name + 'edinburgh review'.

Hello
I am currently searching for a B&B in the Old Town so I guess this is close to almost everything (but this is only a guess)
Thanks for the reply

New Year's day is always tricky in Edinburgh because it's a legendary place to celebrate New Year. I think you'll be lucky to get in anywhere. The one place I've stayed at that I would recommend is Braemar Guest House http://www.edinburghbedandbreakfasts.co.uk/braemar-guest-house.htm which was well located for the city centre but far enough out to have availability last christmas. Not sure about New Year and I think you'll struggle to find anywhere with less than a year's notice. Good luck, and weather permitting enjoy the castle at New Year.

If you have to stay further out because of the difficulty in getting accommodation in town, you could perhaps try to find something in Linlithgow, which is a short train journey out off Edinburgh. Check the tourist information site.

Getting back out on New Year's day could be a problem however, as public transport will be limited and taxis very expensive if you find one!

The celebration in Edinburgh begins late afternoon of the day before New Year's Day Day (Hogmany) and goes into the early hours of New Year's Day. The celebrations are around Princes Street Gardens and entrance is by ticket only. The tickets are usually sold out well in advance. Like all such events beware of ticket touts.

Hope you find something suitable.

Have a lovely time and Happy New Year wen it arrives!

Thanks for the tips. I just sent an inquiry at the Braemar Guest House you recommend and hope the feedback is positive..
Indeed too difficult to find accommodaiton in such short notice..
Linlithgow on the other hand sound too far for a 4-5 days trip like mine. Thanks a lot anyway

I had a lot of trouble finding anywhere without a 3-4 night minimum.

I eventually booked a room for the 31st at the Holiday Inn Hotel, it's 2.8 miles from the city centre but it's on the way to the airport so it suits if you are flying in.

I prepaid for the room but was just offered the use of a friends flat for the night and now I'm stuck with the room (no refund available!)

if anyone is interested just mail me....maybe we can work something out,

Niall
