Prepaid Sim Card
Posted: Wed October 29, 2008 12:17 AM UTC
Hi guys, I'm traveling to India from Canada and I have an unlocked GSM cell phone with me.

I have recently visited Hong Kong and was able to purchase a local prepaid sim card at the airport. That option gave me my own local telephone number and extremely low rates to call North America (I'm talking less than $0.04/minute)

Does anyone knows if that options is also available in India? would I be able to purchase it upon arrival at the airport? how much does it cost and what are the calling rates?

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Thank you all :)

Hi - I know Mumbai has at least an Airtel booth where you can purchase the card. Rates are very cheap (haven't had Airtel service in a while so don't remember exactly). You can also purchase the SIM card and then a calling card for the lowest rates. (I have Vodaphone service and calling card that costs less than $0.02 a minute to the US.) Happy Travels!

Hi - yes , you can purchase Airtel sim cards from main airports - Very cheaply too, BUT you have to provide 2 photographs & identity (eg 2 extra passport photos & show your passport) They are very strict about this rule - so take along 2 extra pics.We had to get some done before we could get our sim- card. Happy Travels

They want photos because of the security problem. They needto know who is using phones in India - well, this is what I was told by them.
