Honolulu Rent a car?
Posted: Tue October 28, 2008 04:29 PM UTC
Hey everyone. Haven't booked it yet, but going to Honolulu at the beginning of December for a week. My question is, should I rent a car for a day or two and explore the island a bit on my own? Thanks.

Golly, that's what travelling's all about, right? Explore? See what there is to see? What else are you going to do, sit on the beach all day? Boring! ;>D
Sorry, just messin' with ya...

Seriously though - Absolutely rent a car. See the whole island! It's lovely! You'll need more than a day or two of exploring though. We usually split our time with beach/water/diving activities in the mornings; exploring in the afternoon/evenings. There's a ton to see & do there! Go for it!

Yes! Rent a car and see the island.
Check out some of these beaches: www.hawaiiweb.com/oahu/beaches/default.htm
One of our favorites was Lanikai beach, light sand and interesting pointed islands on the horizon. Not many visitors.

Karlie, looking at your age, it will be difficult to find a Car Rental Company that will rent you a car. Most Rental Companies have a 25 age minimum. You could rent a scooter. Many people rent scooters to go sightseeing, but it could be a little dangerous, if you have not tried one before. Don't be getting that "Oh! No!" feeling. There are many places to go on Oahu that you do not need your own vehicle to get there. The Bus system goes around the entire Island and you can see quite a few of the main sights by taking the bus. It is also less expensive than renting a vehicle. Parking alone is very costly in Honolulu. Check out the public bus system for Oahu at: http://hawaiiforvisitors.com/oahu/bus-transportation.htm

Actually I found a couple of agencies that will rent to people as long as they are over 21.

So we will be renting a car. We like to do things on our own pace rather than being controlled by the bus schedule. A lot of the packages (air + hotel) also have the option to add a car, and for not that much more. Now to just decide for how many days...!

Thanks for the advice :)

That's true in Hawaii but be sure to read everything carefully as some are charging an extra $25 a day for 21-24 year olds.
A local company we have used in the past claims to rent to as young as 18 and will take a cash deposit if you don't have a credit card.
Paradise car rentals Hawaii.
They have a website by the same name.

I was on the Enterprise website and right on the first page it asked for your age range, 18-20 (I think), 21-24, or 25+. I picked 21-24 and it went ahead and gave me all the prices and everything right there.

I hope you have a great time when you get here.. Looks like you are gonna go for renting the car..
Try to check out where everything is on the Island before you get here and that probably will help in saving time doing the things that you really want to do.. No fun getting lost...
