Hi,
on www.behindthename.com they have only NAHIA, from the Basque meaning desire. On another site I found Nai'a being Hawaian and meaning dolphin or porpoise. On another I found NAIA, being Persian meaning flowing/blossom. On yet another it says NAIA is a variant of the Greek NAIDA meaning water nymph. SO you have a choice there. Best of luck with the choosing and with being a future Mum.

I found two roots from the name Naia.
1)Winston Dictionary tell us Naia is related with greek classical mithology.
Naein is a water nymph. Naein live in water and give live to fountain, rivers
lakes...
2) It's curious that a amazon folk tale tells Naiá was a young indian that
died when she leapt into a river searching for Jaci (the Moon) reflected
image. She was in love with Jaci and was often tired in running away to him.
She was so tired she had too much sleepless nights searching for Jaci, and
then took a nap. When she awoke the reflected image was so beautiful and
real.
Naiá dip into deep water to find Jaci but got drown.
* Am I beeing true when I ask: "Did the greek people told this story to
the amazon indian people?"
I am sending a link concerned in Naiá and Jaci story:
http://www.amazonia.com.br/folclore/lenda_regia.asp
Obviously I don't believe any ancient story from greeks or amazons. I am just wondering on how may you tell the meaning of Naia name to your daughter...

Euskaltzaindia, the Academy of the Basque Language, lists Naiara only as a Basque name, as originating in the place Najera.
Nahia means "want" or "desire" as in "I want etc.". The Academy says it is often used as a first name, although I have seen it spelt as Naia when used in a first name.
link to names page of the Academy site (available in French and English apart also) is

Hope this helps, and congratulations on your baby!
