Helsinki Car hire in Helsinki
Posted: Wed October 22, 2008 08:00 PM UTC
Hello all!
Is it possible to hire a car in Helsinki and drive it as far as Moscow before leaving it off? What car companies would deal with this?
Will there be any problems at the border crossing? Apart from the length of delay with the queue?
Thanks in advance

It's possible, at least with Sixt, see "cross-border rentals" here: http://www.sixt.fi/index.php?node_id=1549
Apart from having to reserve in advance, I believe there's a special "cross-border" charge of an additional €50 or so.
On the other hand Europcar doesn't allow one-way international rentals from Finland (so if you pick up in Finland you can visit Russia but must return to Finland, you can't drop off the car in Moscow): http://www.europcar.com/EBE/module/render/http://www.europcar.com/TermsAndConditions-Details?link=706E370F-90B6-4A43-9F8D-2B6889B2C92D:ContentCentralTerms&locale=EN-us

Keep in mind that when travellers to Russia (depending on your nationality & visa) who plan on staying longer than three days must register their visas with their sponsor or hotel within one day. So if you'll be driving straight to Moscow remember to find a place to register.

Helsinki Finland - Moscow

I wouldn't suggest travelling from Finland to Moscow by car. I have visited Finland many times from Moscow. It is rather tiresome now: queues on border in both directions (up to 6 hours somtimes), then extremly overloaded road Spb-Moscow. You can easily find traffic jams in any part of it, far away from cities, at any time (it is not unusual now even at night). Normally you should drive far beyond speed limit, if you want to reach Moscow in reasonable time. That's guarantee meeting with road police. Of course, if all these things looks attractive for you :) - you are welcome.
