New York City Wheelchair Accessible Taxis
Posted: Sun October 19, 2008 04:46 AM UTC
Has anyone ever used one? From what I gather, one can be requested by dialing 311. How responsive are they? What other companies offer wheelchair accessible airport transfers? I need to get from JFK to Secaucus, NJ as quickly and cheaply as possible. From what I can see, the wheelchair accessible for-hire transport industry in NYC is obscenely expensive. How much should I expect to spend?

The issue with taxis from NYC to anywhere in NJ other than Newark Airport is that the taxis are allowed to charge WHATEVER THEY WANT.

Keep this in mind when planning your stay.

It's tough finding info on this! I usually recommend Dial7, but their web site doesn't say anything about accessible cars. The Port Authority's web page on JFK only says the airport is accessible, but says nothing about ground transport.

If at all possible, it would be easier to fly into Newark instead of JFK.

Anyway, I'll ask around. In the meantime, please share what you find out, for everyone's future reference.

Here are another couple of links that might help. The first is the NYC page on wheelchair livery transport. It links to a list of car services. You would want to contact the ones in Queens (zip codes beginning with 111).

http://home2.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/wheelchair/base_listing.shtml

And here's the Port Authority's page on the Airtrain, which I'm pretty sure is wheelchair accessible. (I would contact them to be sure there are elevators at all transfer points.)

http://www.panynj.gov/airtrain/

You would take the Airtrain to NY Penn Station, where you would transfer for a NJ Transit train to Secaucus.

The only reason I did not opt for the train is because of time. In Sunday afternoon traffic, how long would the cab ride be? If travel time is roughly the same or if a cab just isn't economical, then the train will be fine.
