If you enjoy hiking, take time to explore Inwood Park in addition to Fort Tryon Park. You can hike all the way up to the tip of the island, where there is a nature exhibit, something you wouldn't think existed in Manhattan. Here's the web page on it:

If you click back to the home page on that web site, you'll find loads more info on Washington Heights. Here's the page on attractions:

If you have time, the Dyckman Farmhouse is an interesting bit of history. And it's right on Broadway, which in itself is interesting to stroll.

The last time I was up there, I just asked random people on the street to recommend Dominican restaurants. I don't remember where we ended up, but it was excellent and very cheap! So have fun discovering your own hidden gems.
If you like historic homes, the oldest Manhattan Home is the little-known Morris-Jumel Mansion. If you enjoy jazz, Marjorie Elliot lives across the street from the Mansion, and opens her apt. every Sunday at 4:00 for a FREE live jazz salon. So make an afternoon of it -- give yourself an hour or two to see the Mansion, then cross the street to Marjorie's.
