I find jeans to be too cold but with some long silk or cotton underwear they are better.Personally I prefer a softer brushedcotton, chino type, again with long underwear if necessary. As for footwear..waterproof and thick soled is my choice. I hate having cold feet--two pairs at least so you're feet get a change.

I was fine in jeans the last time I was there in February. Perhaps it was warmer than when Karen went or perhaps it's that we north-westerners are a hardier breed than those folks from the north-east?
As for shoes, and I don't believe I'm saying this but, did you know that you can now get fur-lined, waterproof Crocs?

A really warm ankle length overcoat is the key. With this I find one can wear almost any type of underclothing, including jeans.

Be sure your jeans are nice material, designer jean type. If not people will think you are poor or under-dressed. The Minnesota or Wisconsin look does not fit in here.

You do not need a full length coat. February is a little warmer than January. Many February's are snowless as the city is of course on the ocean.* Just check the weather before you go. The only place you would be outdoors for extended periods is Central Park or on a ferry boat, so extreme clothing would be excess ive but rely on layers and flannels.

* I have gotten by without boots most years!

Sorry, Jeanne but that's nonsense! New York is one of the most tolerant cities in the world. No-one will judge you for not wearing designer labels. Comfort is the way to go. I have never owned a pair of designer jeans in my life and am not about to start now.

<You do not need a full length coat.> for New York winter?

How truly absurd and ridiculous are these comments especially coming from someone who obviously is a non-New Yorker but clearly one wholly in the dark about New York scene and true condition.

Check weather.com for the forecast and dress accordingly. It's a walking city, so wear very comfortable walking shoes. It's also a big place with lots of stores; if you need something, you can purchase it in any price range. No one is looking at you, so unless you're going somewhere hip where you need to make an impression, don't worry about how you look. We'll all probably know you're a tourist anyhow because you'll be walking too slowly.
