| Muang Sing | Lao 12th Lunar Month -That Xieng Tung Posted: Tue October 29, 2002 09:10 PM UTC
When does the Lao 12th lunar month end this year? There is a full moon on the 19-Nov-02 (I think).
Is this still when the That Xieng Tung Festival happens in Muang Sing? Or is there a better place in the north to observer this? I expect to head up the Mekong to Muang Khoua and then over for the festival. Any other advice for this region? I've already heard all of the issues with O and entrapment in Muang Sing. Thanks! |

I had a full moon in Dongh Khong, they made boat races and all night the temples where playing music, and untill early morning they played even a film, I was just other side of the temple and couldn't sleep the whole night, and missed the races, I notice about them just when I asked the next day what was that party in the temple.

Hi,
As it turned out I was right that the 12th lunar month did happen on 19-Nov in Muang Sing. It was great. Part Buddhist ceremony part country fair. Over 2000 people from the northern province attended. Many of the hill tribe people also showed up in traditional attire. I'd highly recommend the That Xieng Tung Festival next year! Brad

I'm hoping to go to the festival in Muang Sing this year and would love to hear more about your experience. Should you arrive the day before or can you arrive on the day? Where did you stay and did you arrange that in advance? How long did you spend in Muang Sing - did you do other stuff - trekking etc? Thanks for your advice!

It was a good time. you can see more info about my trip at http://www.bradcarlile.com/profile/laos.html You should you arrive the day before or even two days before (as hotels can get tight). Getting transport out the day after was a bit of a push as well since all the travelors leave then. Since this is a Lao festival I don't even think you could find a tuk-tuk going into town that day. I don't remember the name of the place I stayed (sorry). I arranged my stay when i got there two days before, then went trekking the next day (see the end of the article for info about trekking). You can get an email address for me at that website if you need more info. -- Brad
