York Ghost Walks
Posted: Thu October 16, 2008 02:07 AM UTC
I am going to be in York the first week of November and I was wondering about the various ghost walks. There are quite a few to chose from and, of course, they all claim to be the best. Does anyone have any thoughts on which is the best or which I should definitely avoid? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi, I don't know the answer. However, I will ask my boyfriend later. He knows York better than I do.

We went on one last month, and were extremely disappointed (having previously greatly enjoyed one in Edinburgh). Very OTT, with few interesting stories, and no privileged access to places one couldn't otherwise have seen. Trouble is, they all have much the same names, and I don't remember ours (which, of course, was "the best"). Sorry, but my advice is - unless someone here recommends a specific tour from personal experience, forget the idea, and spend your money on something more interesting (like a couple of beers!).

Sorry, I asked my boyfriend. He say's that it's been too long to recommend anyone. I think the sound of beers sounds better! I even had a look on the official York website, but there are quite a few walks on there.

If you need further information www.visityork.org

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I think I have to agree with the others - the ghost walks are fine if you have fairly young children but they tend to be of the kind of standard that would disappoint an adult.

However there are several pubs in York which are very old and claim to be haunted, so you could combine enjoying a few top-quality beers (York is very good for real-ale lovers) with some ghost-hunting! The Golden Fleece on Pavement claims to be the most haunted pub in York, but the Punchbowl on Stonegate also claims to have 3 ghosts! Here is a link to a site which lists some more (scroll down past the ghost walk suggestions at the top of the title page) http://www.yorkguides.co.uk/haunted-york.html

If you don't find any ghosts, at least you'll enjoy a pint of 4! And maybe if you have enough to drink you'll think you;re seeing them anyway! :)

Enjoy your stay in York! Suzwa x
