Füssen Bike ride to Schwangau?
Posted: Mon October 13, 2008 10:06 PM UTC
Hello,
I'll be in Fuessen in a few weeks, and was wondering if anyone has biked from Fuessen to Schwangau to see the castles. From the map, it looks like it's only 3.2 KMs, but I'm not sure if there is a safe trail for bikers/walkers? Any help is appreciated!

There are nice bike trails in the whole region, and the distance really is minimal.

The trail is part of the Bodensee-Königssee-Radweg, see info here:

http://www.tourismus-fuessen.de/fernradwanderwege.0.html

On the Schwangau website (only in German) they write that they have put up new signs:

Walking and biking in Bavaria is a dream. They have separate little highways for bicycles. We were amazed. You will love it.

You will love walking or biking here. Southern Germany seems dedicated to biking and walking, with their own little roads. A question for the Germans: It appeared me, that one could ride or walk from town to town all over this region with out being on the roads(except in towns and villages I guess). Is this true?

Yes, there are so-called Radwege all over the place. The network is fantastic. Normally you only share the road with cars outside the cities and villages if the roads have very low traffic. Of course, there are always exceptions, but cycling in Germany is fantastic. (I miss this very much at the other end of the world and only cycle very rarely now because it is too dangerous.)

I visit Schwangau quite often and as I dont drive, I use the means of bike's to get around! Its a really nice ride from Fuessen to Schwangau, the bike paths are great and run the whole way and some of it is through the edge of the woods. The only thing to watch out for is biking when you get to Schwangau, the mini roundabout at the bottom of Hohenschwangau is hell for traffic!
