Kazakhstan Maps
Posted: Mon October 13, 2008 08:56 PM UTC
Hi everyone!
I'm in the planning stages for a trip across some of the 'stans', particullarly Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
Does anyone have any recommendations for very detailed maps showing roads/trails, topography and town names in English, Russian and the local dialects?
Thanks for any info!

Hi!
I just bought Nelles map for Central Asia. In general it's ok, scale 1:1 750 000, with Roman names, roads and topography. But there's only very small section of Kazakhstan on it - just by the border to Uzbekistan; on the other hand, there's not whole of Uzbekistan either - it lacks western part further from Khiva. It's ok for Tadjikistan, general Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Kysgyzstan. But I miss what they didn't include here so I have to buy more maps now (good and deatiled KZ map seems difficult to find).

Thanks for the info. It's looking more and more like I'm going to need a wide variety of maps... I found a variety of Kazakhstan maps at maps2anywhere.com, no idea how useful any of them will be...

I've been working in northern KZ for about 5 months now and I love maps. My best success has been in bookstores. I've been able to find fairly accurate regional maps. Mine have all been in Russian. Be aware that KZ is actively changing place names to Kazakh. Bookstores that cater to students are wonderful for finding all sorts of maps. The stores in the "malls" often don't have any maps at all. It seems odd, but I find that the average person you meet doesn't even know or care what the local population is.

Hey! My name is Manshuk(female). I am from Kazakhstan, Almaty. Now I am in Malaysia studying, but soon in june going home. What city in Kazakhstan are you planing to visit? If Almaty, I can help you! : )
About detailed maps, not sure, because I never use maps in Almaty. In Almaty you can speak Russian and English well. Most people understand English there, not all!

Anyway, if you want help in Almaty, let me know!

Good luck!
