Fiumicino airport is on the coast, distance from Rome city centre is about 35 k m. If you want to take a taxi, cost is about 60,00 euros with luggage. You can check all the alternative transport solutions on Rome Airports Site: www.adr.it, in english too, on the section 'getting there'.

Seem to remember that there is a fixed price of 40 Euro for taxis to/from Fiumicino to anywhere within the old city walls, but suggest you check with someone local.

Why don't you try the express train from the airport to Termini train station? 45 minutes, 9 Euros and convenience :) You will arrive exactly in the city center.

Hello,

There is a fixed price for a cab into the city center. The price is 40 euros. This is for 2 people plus luggage. Make sure you get a cab from the cab rank and not from anyone who approaches you. Also, make sure you let the driver know you are aware of the fixed price.

Hi, I am absolutely agree with Monorailgold - make sure before that taxi driver will not charge more than 50 euro. You can also order the cab with the driver to come to take to the airport. Take a look at this site: http://www.romanalimo.it/
They are very trustebly, I working with them very well.

This is a multiple part answers, so please have patience ;-)

1. There are indeed fixed fares from both airports, as noted: 40 euro from Fiumcino and 30 euro from Ciampino, in each case 'to the city center'.

2. But what is the 'city center'? For purposes of this tariff, it is 'inside the Aurelian Walls' which more or less describes the city of Rome in late imperial times (much of which is still surrounded by the remains of those walls).

3. So to know if you are eligible for the fixed fare, you have to look at the location of your destination and compare it to the city's map. You can find a link to both the press release for the fixed fare announcement (this fare was introduced only 2 years ago) as well as to the Aurelian Walls map in the Transportation Tips on my Rome page (or go to http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/2ebbe/23513/9/ and look for the tip entitled "New rules for taxis to and from the airports").

4. Note: Donna's advice about going out to the taxi queue is right on the spot; however, the problem is complicated that the 40 euro fare is binding only on those drivers licensed by the city of Rome. Drivers licensed by the city of Fiumcino are allowed to charge you 60 euro(!) for the fixed fare - one presumes that this is because they will have trouble getting a fare from Rome back to Fiumicino while the Rome-licensed drivers are going home when they take you to Rome. So make sure that the driver agrees to (1) that your location is eligible for the fixed fare, and (2) that he agrees to the 40 euro fixed fare.

5. While Termini is indeed in the city center, it's actually on the far eastern side of the city center. Since Fiumicino is west-south-west of Rome, if your destination is on the west side of Rome, you would be overshooting your destination to go to Termini, and then having to double back.

6. Note that the fare for the Leonardo Express is 11 euro now. Also note that this fare is PER PERSON, while the taxi fare is PER TAXI. Thus, when you have multiple people, and if your destination is not walking distance from Termini, it can happen that the fixed fare from the airport can actually be cheaper than taking the train (but it depends on the number of people, whether you take a taxi or Metro/bus from Termini, etc.).

7. Even if not cheaper, the direct taxi from the airport is a lot simpler, if you have excess luggage or someone who is frail or mobility impaired, since on the trains and buses, you have to schlep your own luggage and make your own connections.

Dear OP, why don't you tell us where you are going (what hotel or destination), and we'll advise your on your reasonable options, since there are even more options than we have listed here?

When I was in Rome I took a cab from my hotel (near Termini station) to Fiumicino and it was a flat rate of 40 Euro, 2 people, 2 suitcases and carry on bags. We made sure to ask before we got in.

It's nice when the system works the way it's supposed to, isn't it? ;-)
