Do we need to book trips from Cairns such as the barrier reef trip in advance.

I didn't, but perhaps it depends on when you are there. In my case it was August, the boat was quite full but I didn't have any trouble finding one.

WAS THERE LAST JAN 07 IN CAIRNS HAD NO PROBLUM AT ALL WITH BOOKING ANY OF THE TOURS AS THERE ARE LOTS TO GO ON !THERE ARE SHOPES THAT WILL SELL YOU TOURS YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY PROBLUM I DID THE BARRIER REEF TOUR BUT PAID EXTRA ONCE ON THE REEF TO DO THE FLIGHT OVER IT, IF YOU LIKE FLYING ITS WELL WORTH THE MONEY YOU WILL HAVE A FAB DAY OUT AND IN CAIRNS TO....KD

No need to book in advance.
Better wait till you are in Cairns and just catch a nice day for your Barrier trip.

No you don't have to book them in advance, no need to book any trip in advance, as long as you have a few days to do them. Also it is much better to wait until you are here as then you can see what the weather is like and do the different day tours on the says the weather is in favour of each trip....having said that, sometimes the weather just doesn't care to make the visitor happy...only if we could know what the weather is going to be:)

The outer reef can be done through a number of companies.
The Mossman Gorge/ Daintree/Cape Tribulation is a good one to do by yourself, if you are willing to drive, hire a car and do the daytrip from Cairns to Cape Trib.
The Kuranda Train trip up the range and the Skyrail down the range is a good one to do as well. You can catch the train ( always do the train UP and Skyrail down) in the centre of Cairns at the Railway station and then after coming down the range on the skyrail, you can catch a bus back to the train station. It is all very well organised.
