Good and cheap hotels Posted: Thu October 9, 2008 02:34 PM UTC
Hello everyone!
I'm planning to come on holiday to NY City in the beginnig of december. Can anyone recommend good and cheap hotels/ motels where also dogs are welcome? On Finnish travel sites people don't have experiment travelling with pets in NY, so there I don't get any help unfortunately :(.

I don't know if they exist. The end of September 08 we stayed at Hotel Pennsylvania, right across from Penn Station & Madison Square Garden, the cost was $250 plus tax. Our room with king bed, was clean but the hotel would likely be rated as a 1 1/2 to 2 star. We were with a group of 6 (all different rooms) and all had comments about low quality.

hi, we lived in the US and it is not very dogfriendly, you can't go in any restaurant like in most places in europe...so if you travel with a dog, you either have to leave it outside of the restaurant, or in your hotelroom, which is also not ideal incase he will bark...anyway if you take your dog, try to find on the internet petfriendly hotel, maybe they will have addresses, i know the ''red roof inn'' takes dogs, but they are not in the city ...good luck

If you have a small dog and are willing to pay a lot for a hotel (5-star), you will not have a problem bringing your dog to Manhattan with you. If you're looking for a cheaper place, or have a dog bigger than a Yorkie, you are probably not going to find what you want. Generally, NY hotels that will take dogs are catering to a high-end female customer carrying a Chihuahua in her purse.
Here is a list: http://www.dogfriendly.com/server/travel/uscities/guides/us/cities/usonlinecityNYNew_York.shtml
Out of the hotels listed here, only the Holiday Inn Express would classify as cheap, or at least, cheap for NY. Nothing in NY is cheap by the standards of anywhere else in the US. The room will cost at least $250 per night, plus tax of about $35.

travelmad is right that local regulations in America normally prohibit the presence of animals in many public places (except for 'service animals' like dogs guiding the blind). Americans who visit Europe for the first time are often startled when eating at a local restaurant and a dog wanders through between the tables.
Recently, because of Hurricane Ike causing problems for evacuees with pets, I found a another website that lists hotels that take pets across the US and Canada. Here is the link for New York City - http://www.pets-allowed-hotels.com/us/New_York/NEW_YORK/index.html
I glanced at the addresses and they all seem to be in Manhattan. I can't guarantee the accuracy of any of the information (the problem of these 3rd party websites is that the information goes out-of-date so easily). However, I hope that between this link and the one that travelmad gave you, this will give you a good start of hotels to begin investigating...

Thanks for these links. They are very useful when planning a holiday to NY.
There is a one question which has bothered me. In Finland the price which hotel gives you, is for a one room. So not from person. Is it the same there in the USA?

In the US, rooms prices are normally per person. A few hotels may add a small surcharge for an extra person, but it's not that common. But do note that hotel websites will ask for the number of guests in the room when you make a reservation, so you won't know until you price it.

Bill--really? I've never had a hotel room charge per person (unless it is a B&B). It is always per room. They might ask you how many people are staying in the room and put a limit on that number, but you do get charged by the room.

On rare occasions, I've seen something like a $10 surcharge for an extra person...and, no, I don't stay at THAT kind of hotel ;-) Still, like I said, it's not only rare, but the surcharge isn't much anyway...I certainly don't remember ever paying it (but I have seen it)...

Your post above says that US hotels charge per person (not per room). Is that what you meant to say?

oh oh - you're right - there was a huge disconnect between what I typed and what I was thinking, which I didn't noticed until you pointed it out...weird, considering how often I reread posts, and I STILL didn't notice that I wrote down the wrong thing...time to go back to bed, I guess ;-)
