I hate to miss the good stuff ! Posted: Thu October 9, 2008 11:01 AM UTC
Hello,
My wife and I are planning to visit Lille for a long weekend at the end of this month - October 2008. I've got a broad sketch of what we're going to get up to, but I'd hate to miss out on anything good that may be happening in Lille that weekend.
My - broad - plan is :
Friday - shop, site see, eat out in the evening
Saturday - possibly take the tourist office's English language walking tour of the town, or failing that more shopping, then in the evening there's some tango dancing to be done - I guess food has to come into the equation somewhere
Sunday - the Wazemmes market, and possibly a wander around the citadel gardens, before heading home
Is there anything that I'm missing ? Is there some fabulous music event happening ?
Any and all thoughts are very welcome !
Thank you,
Simon May

Your broad plan looks good!
The tourist office in Lille is very helpful - I guess you have already been in touch as you know about the walking tours but just in case -

I have a few Tips on my Lille page which you are welcome to look at - along with the excellent pages of many other VT members too.
We loved Lille, such an easy place to get around on foot (the tourist office has a very good street plan of the old town which is indispensable - I think I printed mine from the Tourist office website), beautiful architecture and such a lot to see.
Excellent sunny weather was thrown in too - hope you have some of the same - enjoy!

You may wish to visit: www.whatsonwhen.com. They do have Lille listed. This is a world-wide site, so it may also become useful later. Gary

You didn't mention art, but there is an exhibit listed at the Palais des Beaux Arts of works by Scandinavian artists who had established themselves in Paris in the 1870's. Gary

This is a follow up to my first post.
It turns out that the weekend that we are planning to visit Lille, coincides with a public holiday in France - and indeed in much of Europe. I am trying to work out at the moment, what that means for the shops, restaurants, museums, and civic buildings.
I've looked at the "Whats On When" web-site as suggested, and it's very good. It turns out that Lille has many arts venues, all of which have a diversity of stuff going on from music, to comedy, to theatre. Again, though, I am trying to plough through to see if the public holiday affects any of the venues.
It also turns out that there is a food festival on that weekend - so great news !
Thanks again for your comments!
All the best,
Simon May
