7 day road-trip Posted: Thu October 9, 2008 06:50 AM UTC
Greetings,
Looking to take a week off sometime next year, hire a vehicle and explore as much of Tassie as humanly possible with a group of mates. Would like to target mainly the natural scenery, parks, forests, lakes... a few quick questions:
- Any suggestions regarding destinations, itinirary, accomodation (camping pref)etc?
- Best time of year to make the trip (no rain would be nice!)?
- Is it best haul mountain bikes in the car throughout the trip, or hire them at each destination?
Any thoughts / comments on the above would be greatly appeciated.
Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave.
One week, just long enough to sample a small portion of Tasmania's beautiful natural scenery. Parks, forests, lakes, covers a very large portion of Tasmania really. Its hard to suggest where you should start.
As you are suggesting some mountain biking, I am assuming that you and your mates are pretty fit. Tasmania's terrain would be very daunting for inexperienced riders so perhaps you could just base yourself in one spot and do some day trips if you want to get into some riding.
There are numerous camping grounds with and without facilities all over Tasmania. Obviously these are pretty busy between Christmas and Easter when the weather is supposed to be at its best. The East Coast/Freycinet/Tasman Peninsula area is particularly popular during this period.
From April to September weather is unpredictable but uniformly cold. Tasmania literally closes down in winter and although some find this solitude appealing, the west coast and central Tasmania can become inacessible with roads closed due to ice and snow. October is normally windy. November/Dec OK some years but can still be cold... Best time to make the trip: Jan, Feb, probably March, but dont say I said so!!!
Best natural scenery: Stick a pin in a map and you will be near some. Even Hobart has a beautiful harbour and sits under a glorious mountain.
My favorite spots: Bay of Fires or Freycinet National Park. Good camping near the beach at both places and a little milder in winter.
