Where to stay Posted: Wed October 8, 2008 11:00 AM UTC
Can anyone suggest somewhere to rent an apartment for 2 weeks near a beach. We have 3 children 12,10 and 8.So, we don't need nightlife but would like public transport.Restuarants and icecream are our priorities.
Thanks, Jim.

Re: Where to stay Posted: Wed October 8, 2008 12:06 PM UTC
We stayed in Qawra / Buggiba in the summer and liked the place for the fact that there was quite a lot going-on without being frantic. There is a lovely promenade to walk-along with plenty to see and do in the day or the evenings.
Beaches are few and far between with the most famous one being Golden Bay in the North of the Island. However, there is NOTHING else to do there and although there are a few buses, then apart from a couple of small shop/bar buildings, the rest is dominated by a huge Hotel (Radisson?)
Qawra / Bugginba on the other hand had rocky areas for sunbathing and swimming so maybe not the best location for kids who like the sea and sand!
Plenty of kids did like to swim and explore from there, though, and there is a small harbour, interesting promenade and a brilliant bus station to get you to the many interesting plaes i=on the island.
Valetta HArbour tour, Marsaslox, Dingli Cliffs, Mdina/Rawat - all would be exciting places to explore with kids so the compromise of no beach versus accss to these many placs may be a good one to make.
Do some research - it is not a pretty island and an isolated beach may not provide everything you need. However, the buses are brilliant and there are so many fabulous places to see. Oh and there is a water park a few miles outside of Qawra/Bugibba (take the bus to Sliema from Qawra bus station) or from Sliema to Qawra.

Hi,
Mellieha as one of the largest beaches. The Apartments Luna is very close to the beach also there are a few bars and restaurants in the area. Mellieha village is up a steep hill from the the beach area with a more choice of shopping bars and restaurants.
There is a regular bus service from Mellieha beach.
Also Popeye village is a short walk from the beach in Mellieha (Anchor Bay)also by bus.
Bugibba is not far from Mellieha by bus, so Bugibba could be a good base to stay as the other posting says there is also a small bus station with direct services to Mdina Sliema Valetta etc.
I was stayed at Bugibba in July 08 with my son, which has a good choice of restaurants bars etc.
I would look for an apartment that has a swimming pool if you go in the summer months.
Michael

You don't say when you're going to Malta! We took our children there when they were about the same age - there is very little for them to do and Malta is more for the retired brigade. It is not very pretty and there are better places to take children - even if it is only France & Spain if you want sun, You could take the hydrofoil to Sicilly.

Not sure about their being "little for them to do" - I agree that the beaches or rocky swimming areas in other resorts are not as nice as , say, Majorca, Spain, Algarve etc but Malta does offer a lot of exciting places for adults and kids to explore with the brilliant bus service. Ancient temple sites, in and out of the streets of Mdina, catacombs in rabat, Popeye village, Valetta Harbour cruise, Vittoriosa fort and waterfront, Barracca Gardens, Marsaxlokk harbour, etc. If you have a nice place with a pool, then maybe the whole package would be great for everyone.
It's all about personal preferences since holidays are very a personal thing!
