Belize what's up in belize
Posted: Wed October 8, 2008 10:24 AM UTC
I was all ready to book a trip to Belize with 14yr. old son and husband. snorkeling, fishing, heard the river trip to Maya ruins was great and I got this email that said unless I was a backpacking youth ready for anything goes while smoking lots of weed, she did not recommend this dirty destination. I liked the prices and I've been to a number of Mexican vacations and thought that Belize was the answer. Please give in put. Another person recommended Caye Caulker and Belize city each for a couple of days rather than Ambergris but the email said no way.
Thanks, Gina

Hello and welcome to VT.

Who was the email you refer to from? Is it a person you know and whose judgement you trust?

You could look at what VT members have had to say about your destination by putting Belize in the Destination Search at top right of page and look at the travel guides and Tips there.
Good Luck.

I don't know what kind of trip your e-mailer was on, but I had a wonderful experience in Belize. I was with a birdwatching group, so that was our focus (no snorkeling, fishing, etc.), but everywhere we went (mostly inland) the scenery was wonderful and the people were friendly and helpful. One advantage for me is that it's an English-speaking country (since it was once a British colony), although there are other languages spoken as well.

I don't know that I would spend much time in Belize City - we heard it could be a bit rough. But that could probably be said of any major city in the world.

I agree that checking out the Belize pages here at VT should be very helpful!

Go & have a WONDERFUL time!

It is scruffy-But thats the appeal.....and your buck goes a long way.
Ambergris has more amenities, services and restaurants but Caulker is much more laid back and intimate. The reef is easily accessable from both.If you really want to go off the grid look up Glovers Reef Resort out on the atolls.

Dont do the cave tours as day trips from the city-Get yourself a little cabana somewhere in the country and let the tour guys pick you up.

I really don't know what kind of trip you are looking for but Belize is easily as over-civilized as the resort areas of Mexico if not more. Unless you are used to traveling in the five-star crowd you won't be disappointed. Hell, even if you do travel in that crowd I am sure you can find plenty to suit your tastes. Your friend that emailed is either over-sensitive or has never been there - period. Tell her to go back to church and hide under her pew –

Scott

P.s. Despite what the other poster said - your dollar does NOT go a long way especially compared to the rest of Central America! 'Course if you are used to vacationing in Cancun - yeah it is a bit cheaper.

Your buck does go a bit farther than it would in the states or Europe right now.I guess that was what I was trying to point out.Compared to other parts of central America ....maybe not. Still cheaper than Costa Rica I thought but admittedly more expensive than Guatemala or nicaragua. All depends on the amenities you're looking for.-C
