Cologne Burg Eltz as a half-day trip from Cologne
Posted: Tue September 23, 2008 11:01 PM UTC
Hi,

I am in Cologne for a week and have half days free. Was thinking about going to Burg Eltz one of these days. It could either be in the morning (free UNTIL 2pm) or in the afternoon (free AFTER 2pm). It's a bit crazy but doable I think?

Would you recommend renting a car? If so are there any inexpensive car rental agencies in the Koln HBF?

I was thinking I could also take the train. A bit more hassle free perhaps than driving. It's a 2-hr train running every hour from Cologne to Cochem. It looks like the closest train station would be Cochem, is this correct? What do I do once I get to Cochem? Is it a good hike from the Cochem train station to the castle? Do you just show up and can tour or is there a specific time?

thanks!

If you take the train to a place named Moselkern (check out on www.bahn.de, start: Köln - Koeln, destination: Moselkern) you can walk up to the castle in about 35 minutes. The train ride takes about 1:40 hours.

Is there any other way to get to the castle from the Moselkern train station other than walking? Bus or taxi?
If walking is the only way, is it uphill or flat terrain?

If you do not want to walk (uphill - as the castle is overlooking the valley) you have to get to Münstermaifeld or Wierschem (north of Burg Eltz) by bus, and from the carpark there are shuttle buses up to the castle.

See here:
http://www.burg-eltz.de/d_index.html

The page is also available in English.

From Koblenz it takes about 1:45 hours by bus to Münstermaifeld, from Cologne about 3 hours.

I just did it back in September. Took the train Koeln = Moselkern and walked from there. The Moselkern station is unmaned as far as I could tell so buy your return ticket before hand!

Supposedly you could take a taxi half way from the train station but I didn't see ANYTHING. The entire town was closed when I got there. The walk was nice and not too demanding, perhaps an hour or so and actually very relaxing. You walk twenty minutes thru the town (very charming) and then 40 mins on the forest slightly uphill (very relaxing). Be sure to take water with you.

Definitely NOT an easy place to get to but very much worth it.
