Paraguay Looking for advice for traveling to the Capital of Paraguay

Advise on good location for hotel, etc. We are looking at at home to buy that is about 1 hour away form the city.

Big question...are they "American friendly"? It is such a beautiful country and what I have read is that the people are just as beautiful!

Any information would be greatly appreciative. Thank-you!!

Hi there,
i think i better divide my answer into three topics:
- Villa Morra area for accommodation: there are a number of hotels in this area which is the Asuncion's new shopping and entertainment district. There are few funished apartments for rent too (kind of apart hotels). www.gerardo.com.py, www.villamorrasuites.com.py, hurard maisson suise, hotelpalmasdelsol.com

- 1 h away from Asuncion means you can look for places such as: Luque, Aregua, San Bernardino, Yaguaron, etc. all of them beautiful on their own rights. I think you need to decide what kind of sourrundings would you prefer, entertainment, neighboors, etc. For example: Aregua and San Bernardino are both on the shores of the Ypacarai Lake. Aregua is an old summer resort that has became into a quiet place because all the summer movement has gone to San Bernardino. So, in Aregua you will find nice 1920s style houses, quiet, peace, cobbled stones, handicrafts, retired pleople and artist. But, in San Bernardino a crazy summer movement, modern architecture and comfort, lot of rich neighboors, etc. For more info on house hunting look at: http://www.boulevard.com.py/showroom.php they build nice condos at reasonable prices (75,000 USD, two stories, swimming pool, chimey, garden, etc.) or http://i5.abc.com.py/clasificados/r20.html A friend of mine who is an architect just told me that the square metre of building is in the range of 200-300USD if you buy a plot or a built house you can refurbish or build at reasonable prices too.

- I think Paraguayans don't distinguish whether you are American or Canadian or so. You will be a foreigner, and we tend to treat foreigners fine. We consider ourselfs hospitalable people. But for sure, you will need to have some working knowledge of Spanish. English is not widely spoken so unless you have a reasonable command of speaking Spanish...

good luck!
