Brisbane Brisbane, 14D13N Family of 5 May29 to June11-09 Stay? Do?

Hi,
We are from Alaska. Husband, Wife and 3 boys, 10 to 15 ages need to determine where to stay and what to do. Yes, economy is our goal, but we may have to play the tourist trap game. I see on the web, motor home rentals are high, is that true? I would say we need to get out of town to see wildlife and scenic areas, to casually visit with the locals, our kids playing with yours kind of a deal. Would anyone be interested in helping escort us to make the best of our time and keep us safe? The Great Barrier Reef is a must for us to see and or do. First at Melbourne 5-20 to 5-29, then Brisbane.

Hi, welcome to VT.

Forget the motor home option, rent a normal sedan car and stay in motels or an apartment. It'll be cheaper, more comfortable and easier driving.
You can stay in Brisbane itself or maybe in the areas north (Sunshine Coast) or south (Gold Coast). 'Keep us safe' you said - Australia is a safe place so you don't have to worry about safety.

Mate, Gold Coast (south from Brisbane) for glitter, excitement and entertainment; Gold Coast Hinterland (south) and Sunshine Coast (north of Brisbane) for nature, panorama and fauna.
Public transport is fairly good; a hire car would be better.
Lots of B&B, backpacker, self-catering, hostel, camping accommodation. All depends on your budget.
With a referdex or Tom Tom you'll be fine (and safe)!
Let us know your interests and we may be better able to assist with things-to-do.

Most camping grounds have cabins for rent at reasonable rates too, with 5 of you travelling together all day I think sleeping in such cramped quarters as a motorhome would really be a strain! As the rental of the motorhome would be expensive as well as fuel, I agree, hire a large sedan with satellite navigation and stay in accommodation at night. Personally, I would mix holiday apartments with cabins.
