I try to set up routing in Germany. Could expertise helps and see whether it is possible or not. Should I skip any town?

I will land in Frankfurt and my travelling starts from here:

Franfurt-Wuerzburg (overnight here)
Wuerzburg-Nurnberg - Bamberg-Coburg-Wuerzburg
Wuerzburg-Strasbourg-Wuerzburg
Wuerzburg-Goslar-Quedinburg (overnight)
Quedinburg-Berlin (overnight)
Berlin
Berlin-Munich
Munich-Fussen-Munich
Munich-home

What kind of ticket should I buy; German rail pass or anything else? Please also suggest places to stay. Appreciate your help.

I don't really get the plan. How long is this trip supposed to take? Hopefully more than 3 overnights?

Strasbourg is nowhere near Würzburg and definitely not doable as a day trip from there.

Hi,

hope my comments will help. On the whole I would recommend getting a rental car for your trip. Like this you won't have to wait for train connections and combining more than one place into one day trip is easier.

Sabine

>>Franfurt-Wuerzburg (overnight here)
ok

>>Wuerzburg-Nurnberg - Bamberg-Coburg-Wuerzburg

I would go to either Bamberg and Coburg or to Nürnberg. All three are a bit too much for one day.

>>Wuerzburg-Strasbourg-Wuerzburg

This means a lot of driving. I would skip Strasbourg and spend this day for either Berlin or Munich later.

>>Wuerzburg-Goslar-Quedlinburg (overnight)

Can easily be done. I'd maybe skip Goslar though, there is not that much to see.

>>Quedlinburg-Berlin (overnight)

Can easily be done. The only problem is that you would need more than a day for Berlin. There's so much to see.

>>Berlin

As I said. One day isn't enough.

>>Berlin-Munich

This will be a day spent for getting from A to B only. You won't see much of Munich, apart from its nightlife maybe, that day. This means...

>>Munich-Fussen-Munich

...if you go to Füssen that day you won't have any time to explore Munich which is a shame. Füssen and the castles are a great daytrip from Munich though!

>>Munich-home

This means you are flying into Frankfurt and out of Munich right? If not I would suggest another itinerary:

Frankfurt - Würzburg
Würzburg - Day trip to Quedlinburg/Goslar (or skip these places) and use this day for Munich or Berlin
Würzburg - Bamberg/Nürnberg/Coburg - Munich
Munich
Munich - Day trip to Füssen
Fly to Berlin
Berlin
Berlin
Fly Home

This amount of travel in 3 days would be absolutely exhausting, you would arrive at a city in the evening and have to leave again the next morning which doesn,t make any sense. Tell the forum how many nights you have - to visit Germany for 3 or 4 days I would stay in 1 area and see that properly. e.g. Berlin or Munich.

Thank you very much for all answers. I feel impressive with your suggestions.

We plan to visit Germany 10 days with all those routes, but it seems to be impossible as I thought. I will adjust our plan according to your advice :) However, I really want to visit Strasbourg. How can it be happen please? Or, should I land in Stuttgart and travel by train to Strasbourg? Thanks for your help again.

To begin with: with your plans you should land in Budapest, not in Germany!
The reason: you cannot buy that kind of cheap train tickets in Germany you can buy in Budapest. I helped many people for free and even in person to get these 173 Euro round-trip "CITY-STAR" tickets across Hungary, Austria, Germany. They are like trainpasses, but the number of days they cover is 30, not 3, 5, or 10. The price (173 Euro first person, second, third, fourth, fifth = half of it) is independent of the distance.

You can cover most your cities by this ticket - and if you run out of time, just skip a city.

My suggestion (to keep with your plans) - look at

http://www.bueker.net/trainspotting/map.php?file=maps/germany/germany.gif

Budapest->München->Nürnberg->Bamberg->Weimar->Erfurt->Quedlinburg->Halberstadt->Magdeburg->Berlin->Hamburg (necessary as end-point!) "there"

and

Hamburg->Köln->Offenburg->Singen->Lindau->Kempten->München->Budapest going "back".

You will cover EVERYTHING - even goinf VERY-VERY close to both Strasbourg and Füssen. However, to do this kind of trip you may need 3 weeks or more.

WHILE THE PRICE IS FINE (175 Eur), THE PROBLEM IS THE TIMING.

Much better than your original plan: fly to Berlin, stay with (former) East Germany, esp. Harz for a while. Use either Ländertickets to travel or rent a smaller car and stay in village hotels. I was able to find very good accommodation in Weimar even at 1:30 AM. True, I was driving and true, I speak German fluently.

Because.... in rural Germany, be it East or West... the people tend to speak mainly German ;)
It is much more enjoyable to travel if you know the language to some degree.

Idea about car hiring: go to National car rental. They are partners with Europcar, but do reserve strictly from National. Try to reserve a smaller automatic car. National will do that... and you will discover at the local Europcar outlet, they run out of the very few small automatics. They will scramble and will upgrade you for free. Last month I got a 520-series BMW for the price of Golf in Marktredwitz.

Forgot to mention "happy weekend" ticket. This is (like Länderticket) a very cheap ticket - but unlike Länderticket it will cover the ENTIRE Germany for 24 hours. Unfortunately it is valid on the weekend only (hence the name!)

Important:

1) both Ländertickets and Happy Weekend are valid in Germany and on local trains only. You can't use ICE, IC, EN, EC, D class of trains

2) both Ländertickets and Happy Weekend and even the Czech Kilometer-bank (!) are valid on ANY TRAIN and well into Germany's neighbors (I used Bayern Ticket on ICE from Munich to Vienna!!!) PROVIDED YOU GOT THE EMERGENCY AUTHORIZATION FROM THE RAILROAD

This happened with us three weeks ago. We stranded in Jihlava (Czech Republic) due a starter problem of US-model Audi A6. The best offer a local shop would do is 400 Euros (YIKES!) for the starter. I bought instantly one for 93 Euro on eBay - but the seller was in Eichstätt. So we had to travel from Jihlava to Eichstätt and back with the starter. For Czech portion I bought the famous Czech Kilometer-bank of Czech Railways. For Bavaria we used Bavarian day-pass. It went well till Eichstätt and than from Eichstätt till few km before Munich. Just before Munich HBf our train did stay for extended period of time - one of the tracks had problem. So we did miss our connection to Praha.

I did complain at the management in Munich Hbf and we got authorization to go to Vienna on ICE (!!!) on our ticket which wasn't even valid on ICE and in Austria - so we could reach Jihlava (close to Havlickuv Brod, between Praha and Brno) via Munich-Vienna-Bratislava-Havlickuv Brod on-time.

The lession: even if you have a "sub-standard ticket" - but you miss the train due railway failure, the management and the conductor WILL authorize you to travel - if you are really in trouble (missing the airplane connection, or in our case - it was Thursday - the mechanic would go on weekend if the starter won't be installed Friday)

Hi,
for the big cities you should plan some time (at least 1-2 whole days), otherwise it's just rushing aroung. Especially for Munich and Berlin.
Day one: Don't spend time in Frankfurt. It's not that much of a beautiful city. Just go directly to Strasburg.
Day 2 + 3: From there you might do Cologne or Dusseldorf, there are train connections following the rhine river.
Day 4 + 5: From there you might go to Hamburg, nice city in the Northern part of Germany with a big harbor.
Day 6 + 7 + 8: From Hamburg you have a good connection to Berlin. From Berlin to Munich.
9 + 10: From Munich you might do a day trip either to Fussen, Nuremberg or Bamberg. Or let them out. Of course you can let Cologne and Hamburg out, but I would prefer these cities to the others... Quedlingburg and Goslar shurely are cute cities but in comparison to the possible options - I won't go there. Just if you have plenty of time...

If you are not on a budget the ICE trains would be the best option cause you do not loose that much time. The weekend and Länder tickets do not make sense if you want to see too much cause you are on train all the time... Just to get an idea (fast ICE connections): Strasburg Cologne 4 hours, Cologne - Hamburg 4 hours, Hamburg - Berlin 1,5 hours, Berlin - Munich 6 hours
Fly back from Munich.
