Valletta Cruise stop in Malta
Posted: Wed September 17, 2008 08:24 AM UTC
Our first stop on our cruise would be Valletta. I found a shore excursion from the cruise liner and would like to know if this is OK? We will only have 8 hours there and would like to know if this would be a recommendable tour?
Any info and input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

"This comprehensive excursion begins with a scenic drive to Cospicua. Walk along the narrow historic streets of this city, admiring amongst other notable sites, the Church of St. Lawrence and Fort St. Angelo from the outside. Continue to Marsaxlokk, Malta's largest fishing village, where you'll have free time to enjoy the colorful scenery. Then drive through tiny villages, to Wied iz-Zurrieq to view the Blue Grotto from the top. Afterward drive through Girgenti, which houses the summer residence of the Prime Minister before reaching Buskett Gardens, on Dingli Cliffs to admire the view from Malta's highest point. Drive through Rabat, past the fortifications of Mdina, Malta's old capital city, and continue your drive through Mosta, known for its famous dome, before driving back to the pier to re-embark your vessel."

Hi,
I think the cruise excursion is a good idea. I have been to Malta 5 times and there are places in your excursion I have not done.It would take more than one day to visit all these places in your itinary.

Valletta is a small town. A visit there could take around 5 or 6 hours.

Ask the agency it the visit to Mdina is included. Otherwise there are daily buses from Valletta to Rabat (close to Mdina). This way you can visit this town by yourself. The visit there takes 2 or 3 hours. Mdina is a nice little place.

It covers many very nice places to visit but you might be sitting on the bus most of the time.

I spent two weeks there and still did not see everything. You could probably spend all of your time just in Valetta going to the various museums and having a nice leisurely lunch somewhere. Mdina is great but from the description you just "drive past it" and the Mosta Dome and its story are fabulous from the inside and it seems you just drive by that too. I am afraid that the tour is mostly "drive past" things when you really need to get inside these places to appreciate them. There is great bus service to just about everywhere right at the main gate of Valetta. You could probably go to Mdina and Mosta by bus and then return to Valetta to see a few things. The distances are very short so it would not take that long to get to places. I have a few tips and pics on my Malta page if you are interested - one is of the Mosta Dome.

For a one day trip I would look at the bus tours available from the Valletta waterfront (The Cruise Ship Port)
