Can someone tell, what is that strange long stone next to that big church frontdoors at Trier? We saw everyone taking pictures of it,and so we took also, but had no idea, why it was there.I tried to attach a photo here at forum, but it wasn´t possible.

Haha, the cathedral's website has the story of the "Domstein" on the German but not on the English version...

Legend:
When the first cathedral was built, four huge and heavy granite columns had to be transported to the construction site. To solve the transportation problem, the architect told the devil he'd be building the biggest pub in the world and would he, the devil, please help him. The devil agreed, but when he brought the last of the four columns he saw that the Bishop was preparing to consecrate the building as a church. The devil was furious because he had been fooled. He threw the last column on the ground where it broke and stayed to this very day.

History:
In 1614, during the construction of the All Saints altar, two fragments of a granite column were discovered underneath the floor, excavated and deposited in front of the entrance. Originally this was one of the four columns of the first cathedral building, which was destroyed in the early middle ages.

Ah! It's you again, yes I remember... that was about Beck's brewery, wasn't it?

Well, since I speak German it's easy for me to look things up quickly on German websites, that's all. The story of the Trierer Domstein was new to me, too!

I´m little like you, that´s why I don´t go sooften to Finland-forum,because I will end up looking for info for all the questions...Usually I don´t have so much freetime,so I try to do my tips. Now Ě´m home a lot, because I´ve hurt my arm,and can´t work. But I can write with one hand,so I hang out here more..
Yes,it was about Beck´s,what you answered before. We haven´t booked up it yet,but maybe we will, even if the town seems lovely just towalk around, but we wont spend all day at Becks as someone did.
We didn´t find any info about that stone in Trier,of in web.Thank you for that.We were looking for line of people(not long, but anyway)going to take a photo of it.And many of them were laughing,so we thought, that it might be some kind of"touch this and you will have good life"-or something like that stories.

Well, it's a "how to fool the devil" story. Not bad either, eh?

I think I should turn that into a tip, although I do not yet have a Trier page. It's been ages since I've last been.

Yes good story.Maybe I´ll put that photo to my Trier-page now, when I know what it is.I´m been too busy to make last summers tips complete, and I´ll hope, that I´ll be able to do them these "homedays".We might go to Germany also next summer,I´ll check your tips also then.We haven´t planned the route yet.My husband has some big car-museum he wants to visit,so it makes one stand there.I forgot the place, but he´ll remember.

Sounds like he wants to go to Sinnsheim. The best technical museum I have ever been to.

I just asked him,it´s a museum of Volkswagen and Lambourgini(sorry if spell it wrong). We have visited many car-museums,I like old cars also.New ones only,if I am buying one ;)
We were driving in Germany last year, but this museum was too far from our route, maybe too north. But next summer we might go for a car-trip again, and go to different parts, and to Benelux and France.Maybe..
