Ottawa TRANSPORTATION IN OTTAWA
Posted: Tue September 16, 2008 02:21 PM UTC
Hi

I plan to visit Ottawa next spring for 6 months or so and intend to rent an apartment during my stay..Any suggestions as to which area of Ottawa is the best in terms of transportation. I don't drive and I will be dependent on the public transit. What is the average rent now in Ottawa for a one bedroom suite? thanks

$700-800/month for a one bedroom apartment. It all depends where you usually go, you may rent one along the transit route.

You can rent something in Hull that is just crossing the bridge and using the same bus system transportation. Hull is Quebec side of the river. Live and entertainement is much better in Hull that Ottawa. Remember that Ottawa live with the Parliament and is a beautiful city but sometimes boring.
All young people cross the river during weekend to celebrate in Hull where bars close late and in Ottawa I think they close around midnight.

Yep, Hull rents are considerably cheaper than Ottawa (550 to 600 dollars) try www.247apartments.com (click on Quebec then Hull). Vieux Hull certainly is more interesting than Downtown Ottawa. Transportation is no problem - www.sto.ca

Note though that Hull is French-speaking which is reflected by the street and shop signage but most locals are French/English bilingual.

They are right, Hull is cheaper than Ottawa. Also on the Quebec side you only have to pay 1st month’s rent up front; as for in Ottawa they usually request 1st and last months’ rent.

If you opt for the Hull side, you would want to stay in Vieux Hull (Old Hull) which is close to Ottawa… walking distance across the river to the Ottawa Market and would also have choices of bus routes to Ottawa.

So the Vieux Hull (Old Hull) or near the Ottawa Market are your best bets if you want to get out at night. Either side you would be in walking distance or a quick cab ride to where the fun is at night as well as to many of the attractions in the region. This way you wouldn’t have to depend on the transit system in the evening.

If you do look up ads for a place to rent in Hull, note that on some sites or in newspapers it is now called “Gatineau (Hull sector)”. Gatineau, Aylmer and Hull became one city a while back, although a lot of sites still call it Hull. Also note that some places in Hull, which are not walking distance to Ottawa, can be quite far if you don’t have a car. Some places do not have a good bus route available, which can be very inconvenient if you don’t have a car. So make sure there is at least a bus route.

Good luck :-)
