We are looking to travel to lake garda by train next summer and are looking to see if we can get to malcesine using a local railway line from verona or desenzano.we would also like to get there by rail without going via milan, is this possible?

There in no railway to Malcesine. Closest railway station Peschiera Del Garda.

Whether you can avoid Milan depends on where you will be travelling from.

Correct, only bus to Malcesine, either from Peschiera del Garda or (betetr) from Verona.
If you look at my Torri del Benaco page there is a tip dedicated to that, with working links. The bus line is the same for Malcesine (just 20 kms more)

We really can't say more if you don't tell from where you will be travelling

Hi, Where are you travelling from?

From Verona, Venice etc it is possible to get to Lake Garda (Peschiera or Desenzano) by train or coach/bus. The Italian Train services are very efficient and cheap!

I caught the train to Peschiera, then caught the bus that travels up and around the lakeside. This stops at Malcesine. Please visit my Lake Garda and Malcesine pages for more transport info.
