San Francisco Driving /traffic question?

First time in SF will be renting a car on a Tuesday to drive from Union Sq. to Point Lobos. Is there a specific time to avoid traffic leaving/returning? Thanks

the simple answer is anytime, but especially 7-9 AM and 4-6 PM. Hopefully your hotel does not charge much for parking.

You can avoid a lot of traffic by taking the train to Santa Clara / Norman Mineta airport area and renting a car there.
As I recall, there is a car rental place one block north of the Santa Clara Caltrain station. There are others within a mile or so - as there always are near airports - and often they will deliver the car to you and pick it up when you are done.

If you are leaving SF, avoid the commute hours in the morning and afternoon. Also, instead of taking highway 101 all the way to San Jose, consider taking the 380 pass to 280 just north of SFO, and then 280 south to highway 85. From there pick up highway 101 again in the south of San Jose. Then you will have to exit 101 near Salinas to get to the coast highway. You can also take highway 17 (880) from 85 through Santa Cruz, but it takes longer.
You can take 1 all the way from SF, but it takes longer.

San Francisco like most big cities is a place to avoid during peak hours. Either try to go very early or else look towards public transport.
