Zimbabwe Transport from Livingstone airport to Victoria falls town
Posted: Sat September 13, 2008 07:36 PM UTC
Due to the recent political situation in Zimbabwe it was unsure where our overland tour would depart from and to be sure we chose to fly in to Livingstone Zambia instead of victoria falls airport. However, it turns out all tours could go back to normal and departure of our tour will be in victoria falls town. However I cannot trace any information on how to travel between Livingstone and Vic Falls town.
Does anyone have a suggestion how best to travel from Livingstone (airport) to Victoria falls town? We have an additional day to spend. Is it recommendable to stay one night in Livingstone and take a taxi the day after to victoria falls town (are direct taxi connections possible between the two cities?). Or should we directly travel from the airport to Zimbabwe (how?) and spend our time there?

I hope one of you could help me out!

Thanks,

Arthur

Take a taxi from Livingstone Airport to the border and go through Zambia customs.
A)take the same taxi across the bridge to Zim customs
B)take a new taxi to Zim customs.
C)walk through 'no mans' land across the bridge-1500metres- get out your camera. There are some good shots of the bridge, bunji jumping, kayaking and if the timing is right some river rafters
Go through Zimbabwe customs and take taxi wherever you are going in Vic Falls, or walk up the road. VF 1km, with a slight incline.

The reply above pretty much covers the procedure, very simple and easy. Given a choice though I would stay in Vic Falls rather than Livingstone. Your accomodation/tour operator on Zimbabwe might be able to do a cross border transfer, check with them. If you do stay in Livingstone for the night then I'd suggest the Zambezi Sun. There are cheaper options but if you consider they are all away from the falls so you will take a taxi there and then pay to get in etc the cost of ca US$ 120/person becomes more attractive. The Zambezi Sun is in the Natioanal Park and only a few minutes walk from the falls. I was there this weekend and saw plenty of game including a herd of about 30 elephant, The falls however were quite low with very litle water. If your overland trip does not tarvel through Livingstone then stay there as you really should see the falls from both sides.

I work for a South African tour operator. If the taxi will be too expensive, there are many operators who do transfers across this border from each side. Expect to pay about USD20 per person (min. 2 passengers) for a trip from LVI to Vic Falls town. Maybe google 'Victoria Falls ground handler'. The great thing about using them is that they are used to customs formalities and they usually get clients through rather quickly. They will also be waiting for you when you disembark from your flight.
I agree with the poster who thinks the Zim side of the Falls is better. Accommodation there is also cheaper as they are struggling to lure tourists.

I agree with the other replies. We recently stayed at Vic Falls and needed to go to the other side to swim in the Devils Pool ( AMAZING) so it was far cheaper to use a tour company for the transport. It was $40 US each but that was from the door of our hotel in Vic Falls to Livingstone, a tour around the town, back to the falls for our swim, picking us up after the swim and back to the door of our Vic Falls hotel. $20 one way sounds about right and I know taxis would have been much slower and probably more expensive.you would have to keep changing them whereas the tour people had another van on the other side waiting for us and walked us thru the border without any fuss. Our hotel organised it for us.
