Posted: Wed September 10, 2008 11:16 PM UTC
Hi Guys,

i'm planning escaping the scottish winter this january. i've read that tenerife gets temperatures of low to the mid 20s in january however it is also quite wet at this time of year. is this true?? also where would be a good part of the island to stay which will have decent restraunts and nightlife? i wouldn't want to go somewhere which has closed down for the season.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
regards,
mike

the South of Tenerife never is "wet", at any time of the year. However, i can advise about resorts in this area as I always went to Puerto de la Cruz, that is a real Spanish town (so never closes down, there is people living there all year long), but it's in the greener (so wet) North part of the island, that receives more Spanish tourism. If you rent a car this is not a problem, you can discover the very different climates and landscapes of the island and the most beautiful, hidden places
However, if you're looking for a relaxing holiday near the beach, without much exploring around, better choose one of the driest islands: Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. Never been to Fuerteventura yet (so I can't say), but Lanzarote is amazing: beautiful volcanic landscapes, no highrise (as different to the other islands), great food and OK nightlife. I did stay in Arrecife (again, a real Spanish town, not a resort), and explored around by car. The Timanfaya Nat Park is a good daytrip. The wineries inland, and the Cesar Manrique artworks around the island are not to be missed.
