Helsinki Public Transportation in Helsinki
Posted: Wed September 10, 2008 01:15 PM UTC
I'm a little confused.

I bought this 5 day Tourist Card. But, are the trams free anyways? I don't see anyone paying for those. And I don't understand the ticketting for the metro (subway). It just seems like you can walk right into the metro without paying? Am I missing something?

I understand that for the busses, you have to pay a fare and show your tourist card, but for everything else it just seems like I can hop on for free. I don't see why I need this Tourist Card.

Thanks, I just arrived in Finland so I'm completely lost!

Ah, ok, I didn't know about the the ticket inspectors. I guess I'll just keep the card on me at all times. Thanks!

Hi,
The trams are indeed not free, and the metro isn't either. It's just that most people have paid it on their monthly card because its cheaper, and so they don't need to swipe their card all the time. There's a hefty 60e fine so remember to have your ticket with you, and to keep it until you've completed the journey :)

The penalty-fee is 80 euros if you dont have your ticket with you or its expired.
And yes, you do need a ticket in all public transportation.
