How to go to Vienna from Munich by train?
Posted: Thu October 23, 2003 03:51 PM UTC
Dear friends,
I am visiting Munich my first time soon in a week, and I am thinking of taking train to go to Vienna after Munich. Here are my questions:

1. Can I buy the train ticket at the station just before I leave Munich? Will it be easy? How much does it cost? Are there many trains to go?

2. How about the weather in beginning of November? What people normally wear at that time?

3. If I want to see both the center Munich and the castles around, is 3 days enough?

4. I am going with a friend together, we'd love to meet VT friends there if that's possible!

Thanks!
Zhuan

Easy to buy $ 65 Check link: http://www.eurorailways.com/cgi-bin/DCShop/dcshop.cgi?action=view_category&database=point&category=19

Schedule from Munich with many trains:

http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bahn.de%2F&langpair=de%7Cen&hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&prev=%2Flanguage_tools

As for weather check link below as you will see it is very changeable so bring warm clothes.

http://www.intellicast.com/Local/IntlLocalStd.asp?loc=eddm&seg=LocalWeather&prodgrp=Forecast&product=Forecast&prodnav=none

3 days may get you around the city and the castles are a bit further 5-7 days would be best.

Any other questions, feel free to ask.

Yes can buy tickets just before you leave, although plan to buy an hour or so before you depart. Trains are about hourly (20-30mins past hour), taking generally between 4.40 and 5.10. two thirds of the journeys involve a change in Salzburg, the others (quickest) are direct. See the website as suggested for more details.

Weather liable to be fairly cold, but unpredictable. You can easily do a day trip to a castle, plus 2 in central Munchen. More castles than that and you want to be there longer. Be aware that some castles don't have long opening hours/shut some days/can be shut completetly out of tourist season.

Enjoy, it's a great city

Hi !

You may check your trains also under :
www.oebb.at and
www.bahn.de

Many of the fast trains will be IC - Intercity and will require a seat-reservation for the train. ("reservierungspflichtig" is the german word !)
And that way you might NOT be able to get a ticket a few minutes before departure, when it is fully booked already.
Something else, that might be interesting for you:
You will pass by Salzburg anyway, and the trainstation is within a short walking-distance from the centre of Salzburg.
a stop-over of 2 hours and you may see Getreidegasse with Mozarthouse, the castle from a distance, Mirabell-garden, 3-4 great churches, the lovely cemetery of St.Peter, the Pferdeschwemme etc.
and 1 additional hour and you may take the cablecar to the castle and have a look on the great alpine panorama!
1st train is leaving Munich at 08.23 a.m., arriving Salzburg 10.03 a.m.
trains from Salzburg to vienna:
12.10 p.m. + 01.30 p.m. + 04.10 p.m.
and will arrive3hours 20 min later in Vienna.
Good luck !
Michael

Hi Hanna,
Yes I want to see neuschwanstein castle and if possible I really want to see more if possible.
We are going on November 1, but will arrive late. From November 2-4 I have 3 days and nights. We will stay in hotel herzog! I heard that it's a hotel sits in the center Munich.
Hope to see you soon!

I think 3 days in not enough to see Munich and the castles. Munich has a lot of sights to see and some are a bit outside the center (e.g. Olympic Park or Nymphenburg palace). Salzburg is a nice stop on your way, but just a small town. I would focus more on the big cities of Munich and Vienna.

Not sure which timetable he was looking at to get a first train to salzburg at 08.23 - First train to Salzburg is actually 03.04 (probably a little early!), then 06.16 and a further 4 trains before 08.23.

Even if it is an IC/EC train, you will still be able to get on board - tickets won't be sold for a specific train unless you book several days beforehand. It normally isn't hard to find a seat without a reservation, and about half the trains are RE/RB (Regional services) which you can't reserve for anyway. Use www.bahn.de (English option available)

However, i agree that it's worth stopping off in Salzburg for maybe 3 hours or so and having a quick look around as it's a lovely place - Best way probably leaving at 7.26, which gets you in Salzburg just before 9am, and if you then leave at 12 you can be in Wien at 3.30.

Have a great trip
