Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Melbourne Wireless Internet
Posted: Sat September 6, 2008 04:20 PM UTC
I shall be returning to Melbourne for a few months in October.
While there I will be requiring Internet.

I have accomodation but I am less inclined in getting a land-line because of the shortness of my stay. My cell suffices for local, and skype works for international-calls.

Are there any options or choices available for this hapless traveller?

Is wireless hotspots what you are looking for?

Here is a list for the CBD:

http://www.onlymelbourne.com.au/melbourne_details.php?id=10425

Or talk to the mobile phone companies like Vodafone, Telstra Clear, etc. They sell you Wodems, you plug them in and you are on line. I have googled and found a lot of options.

Hi Ray

If you have wifi support on yr laptop then you can find many hotspots around Melbourne. If you let me know your location I can refer you to closest spots.
Alternatively you can get the wireless internet modems as mentioned before in the forum reply and the local carriers have pre-paid wireless internet available.

Hope that helps

"Willi" is not on my side of town but as I am in the "industry" I can ask my colleagues an get back to you. No rush i assume...By the way its a fantastic area of greater Melbourne and a good time of year to be there.

I'll be there on the 14TH of October so no rush Man.

I actually own a flat that I shall live in for the time I am there.
I really do not want to get a land line in for the month I am there.

I'll be renting the place out once I am gone.

I have Sissi.
The quest is Holiday apartments.

I doubt if they let me in their lobby to work my lap-top.
But the city list will be very helpful thank you.

Most times it also works outside - just hide behind a bush ;-)

Bushes?...in Williamstown...no such thing :o)

It is a lovely fishing and touristy village but bushes in the main-street, Ferguson Street, are as rare as honest politicians :o)

Perhaps a palm tree with a big trunk?

Nope!no trees either...best thing would be hiding behind a store dummy, in the shop-window at "Kamikaze" a ladies fashion-store, opposite the establishment.

My feeling is I may not be a welcome there either!
Not that I ever did anything to cause me to be banned!
However lurking with my lap-top up my jumper might be unacceptable to the, obviously, discerning ladies! :o)

And the ladies are not interesting enough, so you could flirt with them or befriend them? ;-)

I could... but I only want Internet.
Relationships do not work when one is only there for a month or so.

Flirting is much more fun in private...well at least not in a shop-window:o)

After reading your homepage I understand your way of thinking better and see that it would be too primitive to flirt with shopkeepers for the sake of replacing non-existing bushes and palm-trees ;-)

Or you could do the laptop busker thingy Ray :o)

Put your hat out on the street for the coins and freeze when anyone's looking....then when they turn away, merrily tap on your keyboard.

You could always try unwired, but I found they didnt work in Albert park, so dont know what they are like in Willi. Could have been my house in Albert park - had crappy mobile reception anyway.

A lot of the CBD cafe's have free wifi internet if you are happy to take a trip into the city. You could also ask around the cafe's in Willi if they have wifi. I am sure you will be fine.

That is what I use Sue: Wireless.

Problem is that to get a land line for a few months is more trouble than its worth.
