Cape Town Driving from Kruger Park to Cape Town
Posted: Fri September 5, 2008 09:57 PM UTC
How long in distance and time is it to drive from Kruger to Cape Town? Is there a coastal road to take or only direct roads through Johannesburg? We are trying to find a scenic drive. Thanks.

Also we are staying at a place that is about 90 minutes north up the coast from C'Town but we could change that to sty closer to C'Town. We are not into the night life and more into the beach, diving, relaxing. And any good dive locations to recommend.

Thanks for any suggestions

Well, I didn’t really calculate it but try to imagine driving from Dallas to Miami, it will take long time and there is no highway all the way. Sure, there are plenty of places to visit on the way, but you will need at list couple of weeks to enjoy it.
Best is to fly, domestic flights are very affordable.
If you rent a car, I suggest rent in both places, many do so and it saves lots of time and hassle.

From Numbi Gate (Kruger National Park) to Cape Town is 1842km. If you have your heart set on a road trip, the distance from the Kruger to Richards Bay (Northern Natal) is 648km; from Richards Bay to Durban is 182km; from Durban to East London is 667km; from East London to Port Elizabeth is 300km and from PE to Cape Town is 756km.
As you will appreciate, these are significant distances and it all depends on how much time you have at your disposal.

For us Cape Town folk who visit Kruger and go directly, we split the journey over 2 hard driving days of about 8-10 hours each.

You looking at about 2000kms... There are a number of different routes you can take, and you do not need to go through Johannesburg. The roads are all tar roads, but you would need to download a road map of South Africa, as your route would depend on what you want to see.. You looking at 2 days of driving, and then if you want to stop often along the way, it will take much longer

If you're looking for a coastal, scenic route, I'd like to suggest the Garden Route, but I don't think I'd start the drive from Kruger ~ I'd fly to Durban and start from there.

It's still a long drive, but it's interesting and historic and beautiful if you have the time for it!

Here's a website with information: http://www.gardenroute.co.za/

Hope this helps!
