| Barcelona | HEEEELP!!! cheap accommodation in Barcelona Posted: Fri September 5, 2008 12:51 AM UTC
Hello! I am in Barcelona, i will work here about a year, so i need to find a cheap apartment for long term...i have found a lot of different agencies through search engine, i have already seen a lot of apartments through these agencies, but alas...either the apartments are cheap, but in bad condition or they are renovated, but very expensive for me :((( Pls, let me know if there is any web-page, where i can find the landlords of apartments in Barcelona, Spain...probably, the landlords´ prices will be cheaper and conditions will be better than the agencies´...Thanks a lot.

Hi... I've been on your shoes when I moved to Barcelona. First of all, what is your max budget?
The rental market in this city has been always very tough, as there is a chronic shortage of apartments to rent. There are more costumers than places available, so prices are awfully high when the place is minimally "inhabitable". Nowadays, with the increase of interest rates in mortgages, less people is planning to buy (that was the traditional tendency in Spain) and the are looking for rent instead.... so there is even more competition and rental prices increased (from already very high prices) in the last few months. Bad news, I know. I do not want to depress you, just stating the facts. On the other hand, it is very difficult to contact directly the owners. Here in Barcelona very few owners, if any, decide to directly rent their apartments. They prefer to give it to an agency as this way the agency does all paperwork and hassle of advertising, showing the apartment, etc... This does not have any cost for the owner, the agency makes their money from the fees they charge to the tenant. You may have a look at Loquo as suggested above. Another website to look is www.idealista.com. But even at these websites, many apartments to rent that may look as direct from the owner, you'll find there are just posted by agencies I guess you already had a look at Segundamano (on paper edition and online www.segundamano.es) and at La Vanguardia As well, you may look for apartments in nearby towns. But I'm afraid that anywhere at a reasonable distance of Barcelona with public transport is already awfully expensive too. I learnt last week that nowadays a small 1-room apartment in Vilanova i La Gentrú for 500€/month is a "bargain". Go figure! If you do not mind sharing a flat, have a look at http://www.lloguerjove.com/en/Intro.jsp, have a look at the University boards, etc. (but as you’ll see, even shard flats are difficult to find for less than 300€/month) Best of luck!!
