| Beijing | Sneakers/Runners OK footwear for Badaling Great Wall excursion? Posted: Thu September 4, 2008 05:00 PM UTC
Going to the Great Wall - Badaling section on a day trip and am wondering about suitable footwear for this excursion. Are sneakers/runners/trainers OK to wear or do you need proper hiking shoes/boots? All advice welcomed...

They should be OK. Just no sandals, slip on shoes, high heels or dress shoes.

Depends on which section of the wall you visit and how adventurous you get. If you're visiting the tourist sections of Badaling or Mutianyu, for example, runners will be fine. However, if you're going "off-road" and visiting collapsed sections on the wall, more sturdy hiking shoes would be better.

Sneakers should be fine, however, whenever possible and, on a long vacation follow this simple rule of thumb:
Wear proper foot wear so as to protect your ankle, especially if you're planning to hike or climb. One twisted foot or sprained ankle, especially early on in your trip will ruin it for the duration. Why risk it? You can always change out of your hikers once you're back in your car.

Fine to wear. Those were what I wore even on the Jinshanling-Simatai stretch which I think was much more difficult.
