| Stavropol'skiy Kray | City of Stavropol, “City of the Cross” Posted: Thu October 23, 2003 12:24 AM UTC
I am considering a trip to the city of Stavropol, “city of the cross” in the central Caucasus region of Russia, possibly just after the New Year. I am concerned about the state departments warning regarding travel in the Caucasus region of Russia, listed as dangerous. The Department of State recommends Americans not travel to Chechnya and adjoining areas, and if they are there, to depart immediately. Anyone care to help me placate my conscience. I would like to meet her mother, her daughter and close friends. I believe the experience would be invaluable to our relationship, and especially to my understanding.
I wonder what the best approach to this destination would be, i.e. connecting flights to my final destination. Thanks for the input, |

I agree with Neil. But Stavropol is not so close to Chechnya as it is seems on a school terrestrial globe ;))) LOL!
The most risky place in Stavropolsky Kraj (Region) is Pyatigorsk - on the very south of the region, as there were 2 big terrorist acts in this town during last 5 years. Inspite of that it is still rather popular spa resort with miniral waters.

Thank you, Neil and Pavel
Yes, I forgot to mention that I am contemplating a visit with my fiancée. Your help and guidance is most welcome and very appreciated. Strolling about the countryside with a backpack may not be the best idea I have had lately. Perhaps staying in town and maintaining a low profile and blending in is better, if such a thing is possible. Any other “travel tips” or “must know” thoughts about this region would be helpful. I don’t suppose that there is a Masonic lodge of “Free and Accepted Masons” in Stavropol. This ancient fraternity of brotherhood can often be very helpful to a traveling brother in a foreign land. Thank you, Brian

Hi,
I wouldn't worry about going to Stavropol. It's really far away from Chechnya, and although it's not a particularly pretty city, you won't have any trouble there. Last year, I went through Stavropol by bus, on my way further south, to Pyatigorsk and Kislovodsk, and I have a friend who was in Stavropol recently - he didn't seem to think there was any trouble in visiting either. As for needing to "keep a low profile and try to blend in" - it really isn't even necessary. Russians are friendly people, most of them have seen a foreigner before by now - so you're not that much of a "novelty", and the only thing to be cautious of, in my opionin, is large groups of drunk teenage boys at night. They can be a bit well agressive, and sometimes out to fight - in which case a foreigner is great stuff to come across. Have a great trip - good luck with your fionces' mom! All the best, Ivar, Norway .
