| Venice | Airport Transfers Posted: Tue September 2, 2008 05:00 PM UTC
I need to know about Airport Transfers if I get a place to stay in city center or in Lido. I looked at Viator and SelectItaly and both sell a service from center, and its expensive, and both require a minimum of 2 passengers. private is a fortune, so I would need to know about other companies who do this. Anybody have info?
Also, the shuttle service does not serve Lido, so if I stay there, would need to know about a company who would. |

I'm not sure what you meant by the shuttle service (the bus from Treviso or boat from Marco Polo?) but getting to the Lido from central Venice is quick and easy. The vaporetti for Lido are covered under the same travel cards as the main islands.
I stayed on Lido just over a week ago, arriving by bus from Treviso and then vaporetto to Lido. The journey was fine. I've done the same in the past from Marco Polo. You didn't say when you were arriving, so maybe that's why you need a transfer, but if you're not arriving at 1am I wouldn't bother with transfers. The boats run until after midnight and then from quite early in the morning. Have a look here: http://www.hellovenezia.com/jsp/en/arrivare/index.jsp

Sorry. I did forget to mention I will need this service from hotel to airport as I will be arriving via rail from Florence.

Oh, I also should mention that the shuttle boats pick up from various piers and take you directly to the airport, providing door to door service. Thats what I want.

Presumably you mean the water-taxis? They are not cheap, and I doubt they'll be much cheaper than a something arranged by a tour company. They might be though: perhaps you could ask for a quote from a 'taxi-driver' when you get to Venice?
It's just as easy to get a vaporetto from Piazzale Roma (the main square next to the station) to wherever your hotel is (their website will tell you which route/stop, no doubt) and considerably cheaper: 6 euro for a single trip. http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/articles/vapor describes some main routes. The vaporetti (water-buses), by the way, are not 'always crowded' (as I've just read on a private transfer website): it depends entirely on when you travel, like any public transport. You'll have no problems with luggage. You may well find you can walk to your city centre hotel, depending on which you choose. Venice is very small, and very walkable.

No. Not the Water Taxis. Its a special Shuttle Service operated by a local operator. See link for details. http://selectitaly.com/airlink.php?product_id=1
The problem is the cost, since they say single riders must pay for 2, thus $108 USD, which is very expensive.

I meant you could take a water-taxi instead.

But, having done a quick USD to euro conversion in my head, I can't see that water-taxis will be any cheaper.
I'd take the vaporetto. :-)

Stephen, please for clarification:
do you look for something that brings you from Venice to a Venice airport? If yes, which one? Marco Polo or Treviso? (the link you gave is for Marco Polo Airport) Depending where you stay in Venice, the best options are: to Marco Polo: the Alilaguna boat. This leaves from Lido via Piazza San Marco and Fondamenta Nuove in the north of town and costs around 12-15 Euro (from Lido) or 9 Euro (from Fondamenta Nuove). to Treviso: bus service from the train station (Piazzale Roma, as Jane wrote). Water taxis are rip off for travellers' pockets and destroy the lagoon sooner or later. Ingrid

Sorry, I forgot the link:
http://www.alilaguna.it/?funzione=1&contesto=1 It is 12 Euro and the red line is almost direct (Lido to Airport). Leaves every hour (and also later that what is shown on the site). Ingrid

By the looks of it, the way to go is the Alilaguna Line.

That's from the airport. I thought you were going from the station? In which case, I'm not sure whether the Alilaguna stops nearby.

As far as I understood Stephen, he wanted to stay either in the city centre or on Lido?

It seems the Alilaguna does not stop near the station (Ferrovia), according to their drop-down list of stops. Their nearest is Rialto, I think.....too far.

I dont know where I'm staying yet. I have to find a nice 2 or 3 star accomodation that does not cost an arm and a leg.

You can get from the main station to the Lido by vaporetto too. In fact, each time I've left Venice it's been via rail. Do consider it if you can't find a cheaper shuttle service as it's fine really. You'd just need to leave more time.
For hotels, I can recommend the two star I just stayed at, Hotel Reiter. It's on the main street on Lido and is about five minutes walk to the vaporetto stop. I got a single room for EUR 35 on hostelbookers or hostelworld (forget which) and was very satisfied with it. Clean, no AC but a good fan, TV, spacious. The only problem was that it was quite noisy in August, but then I imagine most places on such a busy street would be during that month.

I just looked that up on the Venere site. As you can see from the map they give, it is quite close to Pzle Roma where you can get a bus back to the airport. Since you are from NY I would assume Marco Polo airport. Yes? The veniceforvisitors site someone referenced is very helpful, take a look at it, and gives links for the busses. I personally prefer the ATVO bus - a few euro more but non-stop with a luggage compartment. I think by the time you walk to the vaparetto stop you could almost walk to Pzle Roma if you don't have a lot of luggage to haul.

You could easily walk to Piazzale Roma from the station: 5 minutes or less. Your b&b is probably no ,ore than 10 minutes (allowing time for you to get your bearings...try to take a map with you!).
The ATVO airport bus is only 3 euro, and entirely excellent. It goes directly from P Roma To Marco Polo regularly and takes about 20/25 minutes. Timetable here: http://www.atvo.it/index.php?lang=en&area=23&menuid=35 Get your ticket beforehand from the ATVO office (ticket machine outside) on the causeway side of Piazzale Roma (not the big vaporetto ticket office).
