Hi there decided to give Hogmanay another crack this year. We came up 2 years ago when it was a washout, ended up in some ropey theme bar called frankenstiens but got to admit I had one hell of a night. Had a nice meal at Jackson om New Years day aswell... cracking place on the royal mile.

Anyway my problem is I think in 2 previous visits to Edinburgh I have exahsted the touristy things to do and the price of them I doubt Ill do them again.

So we will book our hotel for New Years Eve so we can hopefully venture to the street party but any recomendations for somewhere to go on New years day rather than drive straight home. Maybe another town or city close by?? I've also been to Glasgow before and seen most things there.

Any advice would be great.

So glad you are giving it another bash, there is a special atmosphere on the streets at the Hogmanay. I feel the hope and enthusiasm at the start of a new year and all the possibilities that could happen.

I'm hoping that someone will prove me wrong but I am not sure that much will be open except in the heart of Edinburgh. Restaurants will, they have all the visitors to feed. However, I could be wrong, the January Sales start, it's warm dry and exciting in IKEA, just out on the 701 toweards Penicuik. If you come out this way, there is the Rosslyn chapel, but check opening times.

After a brisk walk around town, there is nothing nicer than an afternoon by a roaring log fire having tea or something stronger. There are all the Sunday Papers to read while relaxing (when did you last do that?).

Not terribly helpful I'm afraid, but I am anxious to see if there are any other suggestions!

Is there not a big New Year swim at S Queensferry. You could do that or just spectate I suppose. Don't really know I'm not from that side of the country but I am sure someone can provide info if you are interested.

Try Craigiebield Hotel, Penicuik, 10 miles south of Edinburgh. Bus stop right outside, day bus ticket very cheap and lets you travel all over the Lothians. Well served by night buses ( pay a litle extra )
