How much is a ca ride? Posted: Mon September 1, 2008 04:20 AM UTC
Hi, I will be visiting Siem Reap in a couple of weeks' time and I was wondering what is the cost of taking a cab from the airport to my hotel at Prince D'Angkor?

Just send a mail to your hotel. They will arrange airport pick up for you. All hotels in Siem Reap provide this facility for their customers free of cost. If not, you may wish to take a tuk tuk, which should not cost you more than USD 5. Negotiate before you decide to sit.

Interesting to note that I had booked my accom via Wotif.com at the Somadevi (not far from Prince D'Angkor)and they included both airport transfers in the room fee. The driver who picked me up at the airport was surprised to see that I was alone and visibly disappointed when I told him I had arranged my own driver and guide for the next few days. It got me wondering if the cab drivers do this gratis (or at a reduced rate at least) for the hotels in the hope of getting a couple of days worth of business as your personal driver. Let me check this out and get back to you.

I stayed at Prince D'Angkor before, as well. Good choice of hotel.
I'm not sure the airport transfer is free, but it shouldn't come to more than US $ 10/-.
Enjoy yourself in Siem Reap, do try to have at least 1 dinner @ "Le Malraux", an excellent French restaurant 10 minutes walk up the road from Prince D'Angkor.
Also, try to schedule your Angkor Wat visit such that you can have lunch at
"Chez Sop’héa & Matthieu",another superb French restaurant directly opposite Angkor Wat.
Cheers.

I think you are correct, eggboy. The tuck-tuck guy that picked us up from the airport (who operated outside our hotel) didn't want any money (though we gave him a few dollars) but really did want to drive us around the temples. We did use him, and he was very good, but could not speak English, and basically dropped us off at each place and waited for us. Perfect for us, we had a guide book & preferred to do own own thing at our own pace, the cost for the day was US$12 plus we bought him lunch.
We preferred the heat of the tuck-tuck rather than getting in & out of aircon all day!

Thanks Betska. Good thing you speak fluent Khmer... lol ;)
Love your sense of humour!
Key message for all is that you should not pay for transfers if you arrange via your hotel booking but. You should however expect to be asked if you have a driver arranged for your visit to Siem Reap. Don't worry, in my experience they are gentle people and will respect you if you kindly say no thanks. Maybe if you are happy, you can offer the driver tip.

We arrived without organising a cab through our hotel and yes, we did organise with the person who picked us up to show us around. He also organised a guide. All up it cost us $US75 for each of them for three days but, you know what - we didn't mind..for us it was peanuts, for them - an income. They also knew their stuff. Most importantly, they were Cambodian not Vietnamese and so we felt that at least we were contributing a little bit to Cambodians and boy do they need it!!
If you do a little bit of research you'll see that Cambodia is being bled dry by rich Vietnamese businessmen. Out of the millions of dollars being profitted from Angkor only a small percentage goes to the upkeep of the site and very little for the Cambodian general population.
BTW I think the fare was less that US$10

Thanks all for the reply. I emailed the hotel with regards to the airport transfer but no reply yet so I am not sure will I be getting any free airport transfer from the hotel or i should go ahead and arrange my own.
I got in touch with this guide named John Teng and he mentioned that airport transfer will be US7 per trip and the the temple trip to Angkor with sunrise will be US70 (US30 for taxi + US30 for guide + US10 for sunrise).
Is this the norm?

If you want details for my friend who is a guide, just email me. The price sound about right but not sure about the extra $10 for sunrise at Angkor.

Vanakam, its not far from Prince D'Angkor to the Old Market, only about 15 minutes walk.
But, in my honest opinion, there's no big deal about the Siem Reap Old Market. I suggest you go to Phnom Penh, & visit the Russian Market there. Thats really worth visiting, you can get all the designer brand t-shirts there for peanuts (they're genuine, because they're all made there & these are the excess, after the designer brands collect the consignment they ordered).
Hope this helps, e-mail me if you want more info., cheers.

i just arrived back from siem reap, and we had a guide proposed by our friends previously visited angkor with him
he is an officially licensed english speaking guide, his name is Draith, 28 years old, having his own car (Camry) can drive you around the temples and the countryside as well, he is able to organize you a tailored trip
we'd been there 3 days which can be enought but the place is so nice that we could easily stay for 2 or 3 additional days
people are very friendly, the food is very good and the high class accomodations are also not too expensive compared to the european prices
i suggest to visit the floating villages on the Tonle Sap lake as well, and if i had more time i would go up to the mountains as well, and could visiting some remote temples
the guide's rate is usd 30/day regardless the size of the group and the car transportation is usd 30 as well
to contact him, or for more infos visit his website: www.smiles-of-angkor.com
we were staying at Tara Angkor hotel, which was a very good 4* hotel, i can also recommend it
