Zalaegerszeg: how to get there?
Posted: Wed October 22, 2003 10:46 AM UTC
I am planned to go attend a conference in Zalaegerszeg in a few weeks time.

Any ideas what the best way would be to get there, coming from Brussels?

Hi!
I think the bst thing you can do is to come to Budapest and take the Intercity train from here. It is a 3.5 hours trip.
Ypu can find the schedule here: http://www.elvira.hu/elvira.dll/mr?mr=BPZG just click on the IC+ number sign above each train name to get the detailed schedule.

Or if you happen to have a cheap flight to slovenia (ljubljana, maribor etc) then you can take a train from there heading to budapest, and it stops in zalaegerszeg ("zeg" used in the local slang)

the connections form austria are quite poor as far as i know

Thanks so much for all info!

I'm booked on a flight to Budapest; the only thing I need now is to get to know how to get from the airport to the station. Any English-spoken sites for that one?

There are quite a lot of options to get from Budapest-Ferihegy 2A&2B terminals to get to Budapest-Deli station (Budapest-Southern).

The cheapest is public transportation. Catch the Repter-busz at its airport terminus, take it all the way to Kőbánya-Kispest metro terminal. Then take the M3 (blue line) all the way to Deak Ferenc ter station, there change to the M2 (red line) for direction 'Deli pu.' and take it all the way to 'Deli palyaudvar' (Deli pu.) station.
This costs altogether max. 400 HUF (depends on where you buy your 3 tickets, from vending machine it's cheaper than from the driver, but you might not have coins), that's 2 USD. takes 30+20+20 - 1h10m

Another alternative is taking a taxi, but then it's better value if you choose a company other than Tourist Taxi, which works with quite high fares. Look for airport transfer fares, then you'll come out around 4000 HUF, bit more than 15 USD. takes 30-1h30m depending on traffic

Or, for a bit less, try Budapest Airport's Airport Minibus service, it's like a taxi but it takes like 5-6 passengers and therefore you might have to travel around half Budapest to arrive at your destination. journey time depends on the number of passangers and their destinations.

From Deli pu. I recommend IC trains DRAVA IC (morning, to Venezia S.L), CITADELLA IC (early afternoon, to Ljubljana) or GOCSEJ IC (evening, to Zalaegerszeg) trains. The fare is 2100 Fts, less than 1

So, less than 10 USD, train ride lasts for 3h30m.
Don't forget to reserve a seat (for GOCSEJ IC, buy an IC additional ticket with reservation)

Many thanks for all the information! I got there ok and got a lift back to Budapest by car (which gave me the opportunity to see the wonderful surroundings of lake Balaton).

I've made a mini-mini-page on Zalaegerszeg; don't hesitate to comment if you see something that's not exactly right.

Greetz & happy travelling!
