Yellowstone National Park planning a road trip
Posted: Fri August 22, 2008 03:23 AM UTC
I'm planning a trip to yellowstone and will be driving a large RV and towing a vehicle from Los Angeles. Getting to Salt Lake City is a no-brainer, but then there are many different routes that lead to the park. What is the best/fastest way to get to the south entrance/w. thumb area. We want to avoid steep inclines and windy roads as much as possible.

We took HWY. 89 to Jackson Hole then on to South Entrance of YNP.
There was about 30 miles of windy roads just outside SLC.
After that, easy drive. Took us 5 hours to get to Jackson.
You may be better off going North to Idaho, then heading east to Jackson.

I looked at a map just to refresh my memory. The stretch of road
between Logan and Bear Lake is the Scenic Byway, that is the windy hilly bit.

Maybe someone here has taken 15 North to Idaho Falls, then headed east on 26 to Jackson? I dont know what the elevation change is there, maybe it is better?
You could certainly call Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce and ask them.

Stick with 89 to Jackson going 15 to Idaho Falls and then over is way out of your way. I rode the route from Idaho Falls to Jackson and it is narrow and windy.
